When I was a kid there was actually a free conformation class. Though there are classes for kids (it's called Junior Showmanship), you don't need one just for kids. You can get a regular conformation class.

My best advice is to find a club close to you. Likely dog trainers you'd find in the yellow pages wouldn't have a conformation class. Call up the local clubs and see if they have a Junior Showmanship and/or Conformation class.

There are other sports where the dog "walks beside you." Mainly, Obedience and Rally. If you want to compete in these, you should find a trainer who knows the rules. While any trainer can help you teach your dog to heel, it's helpful to have someone to ask, and to know you're training your dog in a way that won't get you disqualified. Obedience clubs are a good bet, though not necessary if the instructor understands competitive obedience. Again, you can train with the adults. Though occasionally a kids-only class may come up, it's not too common. I trained with the adults when I was a kid.

ADD: Yes, a 10-year-old can show their dog in any kind of AKC competition. Junior Showmanship starts at 9 years old and conformation, obedience and rally have no age restrictions.

I'm still not clear on what kind of activity you're training for. If you don't know what it's called, you're probably not ready to compete. Give us a little more details about what the activity is and we'll be able to give you better advice.

There are two different ways you can go as far as finding a class for kids who are wanting to "show" their dog. You can get in touch with your local all-breed kennel club ( I know there is one in Indianapolis, you can find out the name by visiting the American kennel club website [www.akc.org]); or you can check with your county extension office and find out if there is a 4H group in your area. Both of these groups have classes for kids for learning to show their dog in "obedience" or in "conformation"

It sounds as if you are interested in the "obedience" type of show. If you attend 4H classes you will learn a great many other aspects of dog training and dog owning as well as obedience, and it is relatively inexpensive to be in a 4H group. I am not a resident of Indiana, but I did check up in a web search and there IS 4H in Indiana.

If you go the route of attending classes given by an all breed kennel club in your area, they are more likely to hold conformation classes and you would be classifed as a "Junior Handler." This would be the best place to attend conformation classes.

There may also be "Obedience" clubs in the area, these would be similar to the "all breed" kennel club but would be a club which concentrates their work in the Obedience area. Again, the best place to look for these clubs is at the American Kennel Club's web site.

Either of these again are usually not too expensive, you would pay less if you joined the club, at least this is usually the way this is done. If you join the club, you would be expected to help out at the dog shows which are put on, and to attend the meetings.

Either way, you will benefit in a lot of ways by joining one of these groups and you will certainly learn dog obedience from good trainers. I suspect that the 4H trainer will most likely be the best possible way for a kid to learn obedience, since this is usually a trainer who has had experience working with kids. Furthermore, if your dog is not "registered" with AKC., you can still enter into a 4H club class and participate in a show.

Yes, it's called Junior Handling and many 4 H clubs offer it as well as breed clubs. There are also local kennel clubs (all breed) that have handling classes and will work with a youngster wanting to learn. You can Google to find a local kennel club in your area or breed club. You also can check the AKC site: AKC.com

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/xPkIr

If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.

It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.

Go to http://akc.org
Club search by state
find your local AKC Kennel Club or Obedience Club ask about Handling classes. And if they have any Jr. handler classes or know someone who teaches it.

Also check with your local Am Cocker Club (find that via AKC also).

4-H sometimes also does JR. handling classes.

Conformation Handling classes is the correct name for show handling.
