Sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests has cost the U.S. church at least $2.3 billion since 1950. Here are some of the largest known payouts to victims since the crisis erupted in 2002 in the Archdiocese of Boston:

- Diocese of San Diego, Friday, agrees to pay $198 million to 144 people.

- Diocese of Orange, Calif., 2004, $100 million for 90 abuse claims.

- Diocese of Covington, Ky., 2006, up to $84 million for more than 350 people.

- Archdiocese of Boston, 2003, $84 million for 552 claims.

- Diocese of Oakland, Calif., 2005, $56 million to 56 people.

- Archdiocese of Portland, Ore., 2007, agrees to pay about $52 million to 175 victims to emerge from bankruptcy protection. Sets aside another $20 million for any future claims.

- Diocese of Spokane, Wash., 2007, agrees to pay $48 million for about 150 claims to emerge from bankruptcy protection.

- Diocese of Sacramento, Calif., 2005, pays $35 million to 33 people.

- Archdiocese of Louisville, Ky., 2003, $25.7 million to 243 victims.

- Diocese of Tucson, Ariz., 2005, agrees to fund a settlement trust worth about $22 million for more than 50 victims to emerge from bankruptcy protection.

This onlly illustrates a traditional tenant of the Catholic Church that forbids normal marriage relationships to their priests. Therefore the priesthood would naturally attract persons who could not or would not desire normal legal married sex, and among those would be some who had desires devient from the normal man, namely homosexuality and pedophilia. Also the fact that they would be working closely and even secretly with people every day. This would really make for temptation along those lines. These things are not recent, they were kept in the closet and handled secretly in former times, and in a day of more openness, these things are being brought out to the detriment and embarrassment of the Church. I am not saying that all priests are criminals, I am saying that those kind of people are attracted to the job. There are many more who live honorably.

Allowing priests honorable marriage would solve a lot of problems, not that these things are not found in every institution.

The Catholic Church is the biggest scam on Earth! The only religion I can think of that has never been rocked by scandal is the Salvation Army.

When the settlement made the news in Los Angeles, the talk shows had Catholics and others calling in to comment. I found it admirable that Catholics clearly felt free to speak out about their feelings.

As Unsilenced Lamb points out, Jehovah's witnesses have the same issues. Their hierarchy is also making large settlements. The difference isn't just proportional, i.e., that a much smaller church is paying fewer millions to fewer victims. A huge difference is that Jehovah's witnesses are not allowed to speak out against the hypocrisy of their leadership in protecting perpetrators. Speak up and get thrown out. It's happened over and over again.

1. Many more individuals are born than can possibly survive, thus there is competition for limited resources

2. Within this vast number there is variation, and because of this variation some of these individuals will have an advantage--however slight--over others

3. The ones who have the advantages are more competitive and thus they are more likely to obtain the limited resources

4. The ones who are succeeding in securing the limited resources are more likely to reproduce and thus pass onto their offspring the more competitive traits

your initial words were a statement not a question. i do not understand what you are qustioning - the validity of the claims? the validity of the payout when most of those archdiocese have filed for chapter 11?
true abuse of power in any sense is sick and even more twisted when it's someone who claims to be close to God. i know what has happened to some (i don't believe all) of those children (now adults) is very sad and my heart goes out to them. i only hope they have gotten over it. sorry but that's the simple truth. odd but being a child of sexual abuse at the hand of someone who wasn't a priest but someone who was in authority & family member - i never thought of suing and it's never harmed me psyche. sure there were things i had to get over but get real - sh*t happens and i can't change the past now can i?!

WOW! California has the highest percentage of pedophile's in the Catholic Churches??? That is scary! I live 2 blocks away from one of that church. I believe we sure know who rules that religion.

Edit: All these evil, wicked things need to happen. The ones that evil falls upon are the one's that do the will of the father of lies. I say these are the rightful sign's of Armageddon. Oh, talking about Armageddon I need to ask you a question later about one of the major signs.
"Yes Lord Jesus, come quickly." Amen.

The Catholic Church needs to start teaching the message of Salvation, teach the Bible instead of counting beads on a rosary, instead of praying to Mary who we are to adore, but not worship. The Bible says no one can come to the father except through the son. Not through Mary, not through the priest who is a man and sinner himself. You can't pray for someones soul after they are dead. The bible says absent from the body present with the Lord, if you are saved. If you are not saved you go to Hell, there is no purgatory. Please pray for the Catholic Church.
