Which kind?
Rosey-finches - Most stay in the northwestern states of America in the winter, and move to Canada during summer/spring. A few may stay near upper California year round.
Chaffinch - Casual to northeastern N. America, but most reports of them elsewhere are most likely escaped cage birds.
Purple Finch - Prefers cold climates considering it migrates to Canada in the summer and spring, to the eastern half of America in the winter, and is year round in the upper states like New York and Washington.
Cassin's Finch - Common to upper mountains and evergreen forests. Some parts of the western part of N. America has them year round, a few only in winter, and a few only in summer and spring.
House Finch - Year round to almost all of North America, except the majority of Canada. It's range is quickly expanding.
Rosefinch - Eurasian species, very rare migrant, cheifly in spring, on the western Aleutians and other western Alaska inslands.
Goldfinches - American Goldfinch is from the east coast of the Carolinas down to Texas during winter, southern Canada in summer/spring, and the areas in between are year round. Lesser and Lawrence's Goldfinches are found around California down through Mexico mainly yearound, but some staying in certain places among this general area during winter and summer.
Hawfinch - Eurasian species. Although it is rare, a few may stray on western Aleutians, casual off other islands of western Alaska.
Bullfinch - Also Eurasian. Causal migrant on Aleutians, casual in winter on Alaskan mianland.

Those are all the North American Finches, and where they are found. Even if you were only talking about one, like the American Goldfinch, at least you learned something about all the finches in North America :]

Hope I helped!

I have a two sock Finch Station that I usually can count up to 24 birds on and have to fill it every three days, but this summer the Finches have been gone. I haven't had to fill the station in weeks. I am on the California Central Coast in Santa Maria, CA. This is the first time that has happened and the feeder has been there for five or more years.

Most do, depends on the species.

House Finches generally don't.

Rosy-Finches migrate to lower elevations, not necessarily south.

Many finches migrate more some years than others depending on how pine cone crops are.

The goldfinch is 1 of my favorite birds. Not only colorful but they dip and dive in the sky like they are playing. Their songs beautiflu to hear. The goldfinches are permanent residents from north dakota to oklahoma to the adjacent states in the east. Some will migrate to southern canada in the summer time. Some will migrate to texas to florida in the winter. Most migrate for food security.

Historically speaking, the Midwest had still wavered on the slavery issue. Many that went North did so because family or friends had gone before them by way of the Underground Railroad, so they may have gone in order to reunite. The North was the most abolition-friendly area in the US at that time, and elsewhere, the issues of race and slavery were still very charged.

The goldfinch stays in Ohio all winter. The male loses his bright color during the winter months, and looks like the females. My neighbor has a finch feeder which has niger seed, but the come to my feeder, to get black oiled sunflower seeds, when the weather is cold. I suspect that they get more food value from those than the niger seed, when it is really cold.
