AKC GREAT DANES range mostly by color/lines/and size.. they are priced between $400.00-2500.00 or even higher..

NOW, there are people out there with CKC danes. (contiental kennel club) a lot of people mailed in for their papers, 3 pictures and 2 signatures and guess what? they get papers on their dogs.. a lot of them don't even know history, or even if the dog is purebred. YET they sell their dogs for just as much as AKC or even higher.. Buy from a reputable breeder! DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THE BREEDER

PLEASE.....PLEASE.....do not buy a great dane unless it is from a registered, quality breeder.............you can not buy a great dane of any quality for under $1000 as any quality breeder would not be selling their puppies for under that figure...There are far too many back yard dane breeders selling inferior problematic dogs. They are subject to hip problems, joint problems because of their size and inferior breeders don't hip score. These same puppies are the ones people buy for $500 because of the novelty factor only to dump them when they become too expensive to feed, vacinate, worm and become disobedient because they are not given the appropriate amount of training and personal time. Unless you have a good expendible wage, a good size yard and are prepared to do the hard yards in terms of training, don't even considerate a dane.
Danes are smart, affectionate animals that can easy become disobediant, destructive and unruly.
A dane for a pet will set you back a minimum of $1,000 -$1,500. Then the costs come in....special kennels because they don't make any big enough, special sized bedding because they are so big and so heavy and need extra support, then the weekly feed bill of approximately $20-$40 per week and don't think you can skimp and buy cheap food becuase they have sensitive digestive systems. The food bill for my dane is over $150.00 per month. Then there's worming, heartworm injections etc etc...Oh, and they have to fit in your car....you can't expect to jamb them in the back of a toyota echo. Have a good long think about it before you take one home, whether it's a puppy or a rescue dane. Danes are unlike any other dog I have ever had and I've had all kinds over my lifetime - shepherds, kelpies, heelers. Danes constantly crave your time and they have an 'it's all about me' attitude. There are so many danes neglected, abused and dumped every year because of all the above reasons that its sickening.
Danes are expensive ongoing dogs, so have a good look at your cheque account before you rush out and buy one.

I agree with the other answers - it depends on what you want (pet or show dog) and who you buy it from. I own 2 fabulous danes. Zoe, my 2 year old female I rescued last year, and Winston we rescued just 4 weeks ago. The vet's best guess is that Winston is around 12 months old, but no one really knows as he was abandonded along the road!!! The risk you take with rescues is that you don't really know what happened to them in the past. Zoe is well balanced and easy going. Winston is nervous, has separation anxiety (understandably) but loves us like anything. The beautiful thing about Danes is, no matter their past, they are loving and kind and easy to re-train. Please consider a rescue. Some are as young as 6 months and usually come from people who are shocked at how large these great dogs really get. You'll save a life and get a fabulous friend as well!!

Buy from a responsible breeder!!! Do NOT buy on line, from newspapers, trade magazines, etc...Go to the GDCA site for a listing of responsible breeders, also check out the DOL site and other Great Dane groups.

You should expect to pay anywhere from $800 - $1000 for a pet puppy and $800 - over $2000 for a show quality pup. Price will vary depending on bloodlines, color (harlequin and mantle show pups are usually a bit more expensive because they are harder to breed for show), area of country, breeder, etc.

Make sure any breeder you choose has health tests, pedigrees, registered with reputable registry not one of the many scam registries, shows or has dogs evaluated, etc.

Check out Great Dane Rescues..these are also listed on the GDCA site.

*****Danes do NOT have their tails docked...Breeders are NOT "registered" with AKC********

Please carefully research reputable breeders before making a purchase. Here is a great article about how to recognize a reputable breeder:

Or find a Great Dane rescue in your area. There are many benefits to adopting a full grown dog. They're usually housebroken and past the chewing stage.

Good luck!

Remember that if you get a bargain on a dog it could have health problems from inbreeding or other irresponsible practices. It is best to buy from a respected breeder and pay the premium price for it.

It sucks to see your dog die slowly from illness and if you can avoid it with a few extra bucks do it.

I just bought one for 200 dollars, but it had no papers, no shots, tail still attached and uncropped ears. We got it a 8 weeks old. Unless the parents are grand champions, i would pay no more than 500 for one, depending on how much vet care has already been done.
