Kindergarten is not required in the state I live in. Most people don't even realize that it is not mandatory.

Have you thought about homeschooling while you are traveling? Find out from her teacher what the class will be covering while you are away. You could teach her yourself. She should not have to repeat kindergarten.

In the state that I live in kindergarten is not mandatory. However, I STRONGLY recommend having your child complete kindergarten. Almost every child does, and kindergarten lays the foundation for so many skills that children use in first grade. Kindergarten has changed from a play based introduction to school to an important year for kids. Many schools start reading, writing and math instruction in kindergarten, not to mention prereading skills such as phonics, phonemic awareness (hearing sounds) understanding of how books work and so many more skills. I taught kindergarten for 2 years and now teach first grade. It is a big jump. I can't imagine a child in my first grade class without having had kindergarten. Also, most children are 6 when they start kindergarten, although I know it is different in some states.
That being said, you do need to do what is important to your family. You could ask to speak to someone in charge of your school, like the superintendent of schools.

She needs the lessons taught in kindergarten in order to succeed in school.

One option you have is to homeschool her for the time you on your pilgrimage, providing it will actually be able to get done.

To do that, you may need approval from the school district, depending on what state you're in.

Go to HSLDA.org to figure out your state's specifications and laws.

The lessons in kindergarten are the foundation for all the grade level lessons thereafter, so if you do go the homeschool route, make sure it is something you can handle.

Plus, keep in mind that when or if your daughter returns to regular school, she may need to take a test before they admit her at her appropriate level.

If you're in Texas, they just usually go on your word because here homeschools are treated as private schools.

Well if your 'pilgrimage' is more important than your daughter's education then I suggest you have her repeat kindergarten again. Kindergarten teaches essential basics that open the doors to elementary school. Plus, she is not going to adjust very well at all in first grade.

It does depend upon where you live. In California there are not legal mandates requiring kinder, but there are legal guidelines (educational code, CA. dept. of education) about how old a child needs to be to start kinder and first. A child must be 5 years old by Dec. 2 of that school year to start kinder, and 6 years old by Dec. 2 of that school year to start first. There are not specific ages spelled out for the other grades. If you live in CA, and your child will be 6 by Dec. 2 of the year you want her to go into first grade you will be fine. Please make sure you have lists of sight words and bits of work for her to do to keep it fresh in her mind so she/he will be ready for first grade!

My wife is a teacher. It depends on your state. Some states don't require kindergarten and then she could bypass kit. However, I would hope you would work with her to catch up.

In the state of Washington I don't think it's required, cause my little bro of 5 just started 1st grade about 5 days ago and he has no prior schooling

ANd please PLEASE don't listen to these pseudo-intellectuals about "RAH RAH BLAH BLAH YOUR CHILD NEED KINDERGARDEN RAHRAHBLAHBLAHBLAHHHH"

They're just ignorant. Plain and simple, You see, what determines a child's "success" in their education does NOT rely on foundation. Everyone can learn, and if kindergarten was the most important thing well then, nobody would skip kindergarten. Let me tell you, the proper mind-set is what people need to learn, not a stupid foundation. Foundations can be laid whenever.

"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't force him to drink" It's not....You can lead a horse to water, but he'll only drink if he has the proper foundations for knowing how to drink"

instill in your child a passion for learning and curiosity. That'll be a million times better than 2 months of kindergarten.

You should always have your child do kindergarten, even though its optional in many countries. Kindergarten prepares your child with the foundations to his/her skill.

Depends entirely on the state's curriculum. Check it out online or call your Regional Office of Education for advice.
