A warrant will be issued for failure to appear. On top of the original charges, the judge could also add contempt of court charges as well for not appearing in court.

If you fail to appear, a bench warrant is issued for failure to appear. You will eventually be arrested, and held without bail, until you (or your friend) appear to answer before a judge on this, and the previous charge. Your friend will probably be held without bail. Once some fails to appear, the court is usually not too quick to grant bail. Most judges don't take kindly to someone who doesn't appear when they are supposed to. Your friend is going to spend some time in the county jail.

In most places a warrant will be taken out for their arrest. The charge is Failure to Appear. Your friend will be arrested and will stay in jail until they see a judge.
They have already shown that they will not show up to court so why would they be released after being arrested?

Warrant
Another warrant
And more and more warrants
You don't show, warrants are issued. If the department has a warrant squad, they will be looking for your friend at his house, his neighbors, his friends, other family members .... or one day he will get stopped for a traffic violation and he will get hauled in to jail.
It's best if your friend gets down to the Clerk of Courts and tries to get these taken care of ASAP. Hopefully they will be allowed to set up another court date and hopefully, they will be adult enough to show up this time and apologize to the courts for their actions.

plain and simple - you have to go to court when they tell you to go.
whether you are innocent or guilty, no matter if you want to fight it or plea the case out - you have to go to court when they tell you to.
by not going, he's only making things worse for himself.
