Good question. There are rumors that different cultures used tickling as a method of execution, but I've never seen anything that verifies this (the historical context where they got the info, a name of the person executed this way, etc.). The truth is, the only way someone can actually be tickled to death is if they have a breathing disorder (asthema, etc.), a weak heart, or some other physical condition that the stress of laughing uncontrolably would trigger. I am super ticklish, and have been tickled for VERY long periods of time, non-stop (we're talking hours here!), and I'm still alive. The bottom line is, if you are healthy, when the laughing has gone on to a point that your body is not taking in enough air, you will pass out. At that point your body no longer registers the tickling sensations, so you no longer laugh, and your respiration returns to normal. If you are the victim of a devilish tickler, they will simply continue the tickling when you come to, and the process runs in the same cycle. So, even though it is torturous getting tickled for long times (and I DEFINATLY empathise with you-been there, done that!!), it will NOT kill you, just make you WISH you were dead : - ).

Generally, the tickling itself cannot kill you. The only way that it can play a major part in somebody's death is if they have a medical condition like a bad heart or asthma. Otherwise, you would most likely pass out from lack of oxygen if somebody actually was cruel enough to tickle you that much.
In my opinion, playful tickling is a lot of fun as long as it is consensual and the tickler always respects the limits, desires and safety of the ticklee.
Non-consensual tickling, other than a very short playful tickle, can turn into abuse and can be considered to be showing total disrespect to the ticklee. Just because the person is laughing involuntarily does not mean that consent has been granted.
