There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the late model SAABs - IE 2002 - on . The early ones were junk - but because they are soft in the market - they are an excellent value - where else you gonna get a turbocharged, intercooled 205 Hp motor with ABS, traction & stability control for just over $10-15 grand ?

The Engines are extremely tough as are the transmissions. The parts are expensinve - but have you priced a part for any modern car? They are a GM car now so much of the stupid stuff has been fixed - IE like Ford & Jaguar. The shop rates are similar - hovering arounf $80/hr. To counter these you need to buy the parts online & find a good independant repair shop. There is nothing that will touch a SAAB 9-5 Aero wagon in performance, functionaly or value - make sure you buy 2002 & later . Also check out the SAAB wiki ..I have a 2002 SAAB 9-3 convertible that I bought new with 75K - has had a few nits - nothing major. My car has a chip in it & makes almost 300Hp - my car is dangerously fast - the 9-5 can be made even hotter because they have the larger motor than the 9-3 - these cars can be made VERY fast very easily because all the perfromance hardware is already there - see www.genuinesaab.com

If you need a wagon - I woulnt hesitate .. just buy one that has been maintained & has all the records & log books etc. I would buy one from a dealer off ebay in a hot climate like Texas - there is also a guy in Minnesota that seems to get alot of clean cars ,, What other wagon is there - BMW - SAAB will run away from it, Subaru might be a good one - SAAB is bigger, Mercedes Benz - nice car - but slow, expensive & poor resale .. All SAABS get about 30 Mpg in cruise .

Depends on your personal taste.
If you want a sporty wagon, go for the 9-2x
If you prefer a roomier ride, the 9-5 wagon is your best bet.
If I HAD to choose another make, it would be the Subaru Outback.

I worked for a saab / Volve shop for 2 years.

DO NOT buy a Saab, they are junk. Anything but a SAAB.
