Just for Men hair color and comparable products are usually $7 - $8 while women's hair color products are often on sale for under $5.

Is there really a difference in men's and women's products or any reason that a man should not use women's hair color?

The only reason I consider doing it is cost. Seems like it would be no difference in the result but since there are so many more women's products on the market there is greater price competition and therefore far cheaper prices.

There is no difference. Men can certainly use women's hair coloring kits. Hope you find the shade you want!

Men's hair coloring kits are usually designed to work faster & concentrate on coloring gray hair rather than changing hair color. These kits may also have a little less product since most men have short hair. The bottom line: manufacturers assume men want convenience & and simplicity.

If you don't mind spending a bit more time - then go ahead. Women's hair coloring kits may take more time, but you'll end up w/ nicer color and you'll save $.

BTW, salons use the same stuff for men & women. If professionals can, why not you?

It's absolutely OK! One thing about hair color lines, either retail or professional, that are tailored for men is that they tend to be more ash based. In plain English: they're a flatter color. Men are not used to coloring their hair and sometimes it can leave a "warm" hue. Many people's eyes see these hues as red or orange. Lines like "Just For Men" as a consumer example or "Color Camo" from Redken as a professional example are very cool. THese cool tones cancel the warm red/orange tones we call remaining pigments. They look very flat and devoid of warmth like most virgin hair would. So, if you've found one that you like, weather marketed for women or men, keep right on using it!

Hair Dye Men

I don't know if there is a difference in the chemical components, but when my husband used Just for Men his hair turned BLACK and the box was labeled light brown!!! So he always uses Revlon Colorsilk, which is for women. He uses that one specifically b/c it is $3 and since I buzz his head once a week it would be ridiculous to spend $7 a week on hair dye. If I were you I would not even try Just for Men.

I've personally noticed that women's hair dye has high and low lights added into the formula, even if it not a "highlighting kit" but men's formulas tend to be flat color. My husband's head looked like we spray painted it after using the Just for Men. He also likes Garnier Nutriesse and any of the L'Oreal lines. Hope this helps!

Nooo... you must not use women's hair dye... you'll grow breasts!

Seriously, women's hair dye's the same stuff, usually better quality and larger amounts, almost always has a special conditioner that "just for men" doesn't have, and comes in a billion different shades instead of the 4 or so that the men's stuff comes in. Men's dye's are typically faster to apply, but don't give as good a result in my opinion.

If you're just covering grey hair get a colour at least one shade lighter than your natural hair (more is better, I naturally have dk brown to black hair and I use light ash!) so you don't look like you've coloured your head in with a texta. I also only apply it for 15 minutes instead of the 25 mins the instructions state. You're better better off with it lighter than you need than darker, as you can always put more dye on but it's very hard to take it off. Greys covered with a lighter colour also looks more natural.

I have facial hair and when I dye my hair (usually after I get it cut) I use the same stuff for my beard. In between cuts I use the "just for men" dye specifically for facial hair - not because it's better, but because it comes in two tubes and you can mix up only as much as you need rather than using it all at once. I wouldn't use it on eyebrows etc though, the chemicals smell pretty harsh and I wouldn't want it getting in my eye!

I also hang onto the large bottle that comes in the hair dye with the dye washed out. It annoys me to mix it all up and throw away at least half of it and it's no good after about an hour, so before I mix it up I pour half of the "cream" into the leftover bottle and add half of the "colour" to that, saving the other half of each for next time. Unless you have really long hair you'll still have plenty.

There is no difference, and there are women's dyes that are made to cover grey just as well as men's dyes. My friend and I used to color her boyfriend's hair with Nice 'n Easy all the time.

I've experienced mine both ways too... but the husband prefers it short... he never ever complains when I grow it very long, but is always all over him self w/the complements when I cut this off
