I'm planning on writing a modern allegory of the Gospel story. Here are the characters:
Josh (that's Jesus)- a "roving" religion professor/miracle worker; formerly a cabinet-maker, and raised by his step father (also a cabinet-maker) and his mother.
Pete (that's Peter)- a friend and student of Josh; a fisherman by trade.
Andy (that's Andrew)- Pete's younger brother who introduced him to Josh; also one of Josh's students.
Jimmy (James)- also a fisherman by trade; a friend of the brothers Andy and Pete; a friend and student of Josh
Johnny (John)- Jimmy's younger brother; thought to be Josh's best friend and favorite student.
Phil (that's Philip)- also a student of Josh; introduced Josh to his friend Nate.
Nate (Nathaniel)- a very honest and pious, young student of Josh; a man "in whom is found no guile."
Matt (Matthew)- a former IRS agent; became a student of Josh.
Tommy (Thomas)- a student of Josh who is very skeptical about some things.

Why would you want to do this? What are you trying to do? I don't think this is a good idea. It is very offensive to Christians everywhere.

Being as Micheal Coveney did such an allegory back in the late 60's which was later made into a rock opera in 1970 known as "Jesus Christ: Superstar" you would be guilty of plagiarism. So, though it's a great idea it would be a hassle going through all the red tape and production permission to get it done.

Sounds like you're seeking a little glory for yourself. Forget this nonsense and get back to the task at hand.
Be very careful, and look into who may have put this nonsense into your head, because it most certainly WAS NOT the Father. Why try to drag others away from time spent in the scriptures so that they can read YOUR ideas. This is serious, and I hope you reconsider this bad idea. I'm not on your case, but this does concern me.

I dunno. With all these changes, are you sure people will recognize it?
Seriously, an allegory tries to convey an idea in new terms. So far this just sounds like a rehash of the same old story. Everyone has virtually the same names, the same jobs. What exactly will people learn that they couldn't get from the original? Show some creativity!

If you stick to the Bible and Christianity with your characters I think it has the makings of some great books, maybe childrens stories, instead of fairy tales and harry potter you could give them something else to read, this is a big thumbs up for me, I pray you are successfull, I praise the Lord for you!!

Have you read the "Joshua" books? Sort of the same idea. There was another novel I read, can't remember the name, but it too was a modern Jesus in the United States, but the Jesus character was black and lived in the inner city.
So, it really isn't original.

You want to try to improve upon "The Greatest Story Ever Told". I would not recommend it.

ADDING YOUR OWN PERSONALITY INTO YOUR READINGS...THIRSTY FOR THE WORD OF GOD I THINK ITS GREAT I SOMETIMES DO THE SAME....YOUR TRANSLATING THE BIBLE FOR OTHERS TO RELATE TO IT BETTER SINCE WE DO LIVE IN THE MODERN ERA...GOOD FOR YOU...A WINNER OF SOULS
JUST MAKE SURE THE INFO IS CREDITED TO THE BIBLE & ITS INTERPRETATION IS YOUR OWN...ITS JUST LIKE WRITING A BOOK ON THE NAME OF JESUS ...
