I have been exercising a lot while also doing the Atkins diet. I am not losing weight and posted a question on another board about the possible hinderance. One reply said that exercising, or certain exercises that involve weights or resistance activity, might stall weight loss results because this will cause my developing muscles to retain water.

Is that true?

Where can I get information about what activity is best while doing Atkins?

I just naturally assumed that the diet and exercise would go hand in hand!

I'm not interested in other diets, or Atkins debunking. I am doing this diet based on advice from my doctor due to specific medical condition that Atkins counters. I just need advice specifically about Atkins. Thanks all!

I am not just trying to lose weight in general. I am trying to lose fat weight.

1) Not only can you, Atkins said in his book "If you are not exercising, you are not doing Atkins".

2) While exercise may hinder your SCALE loss, due to water retention and/or due the the fact that you are building muscle which is heavier than fat, you are still burning fat, and probably you are shrinking even if it is not showing on the scale. People who are very fit can look smaller and trimmer at higher "weights" than people who are out of shape and flabby.

Try measuring yourself, of see if your tight clothes are fitting better (or your regular clothes are getting a bit loose).

I've gone through a couple of periods when I didn't lose a single pound for a few months, but people were commenting on how much weight I was losing, simply because I was replacing (light and bulky) fat with (heavy and trim) muscle.

I remember reading the Atkin's diet book. I remember that book saying that if you are not doing an exercise program then you were not truly doing the Atkin's diet.

A lot of people look to Atkin's as a magic bullet. Do it and you will never be overweight again. However, it does not work like that. You need to use regular exercise, both cardio and resistance, to help it work and to also just live a healthier life. Both forms of exercise are beneficial to you as long as you don't try to overdo them.

As for information about Atkin's, I suggest finding the book. Here is the Amazon link for it.

I tried the diet once and had great results but I just could not maintain it. Eventually, carbs will seduce you. However, I feel that it worked well as a starter diet. Spend some time on it and then gradually shift to a more balanced diet.

some of these answers are really bad. The one coming from the "certified personal trainer" kills me. Do they just give those certificates out to anyone and they never have to so much as take ONE science related physiology class? I have tried your 3-2-1 diet for 12 months, strictly counting and working out for 40-60 minutes per day. I lost 5 pounds, was constly hungry, had terrible inflamation and slept 9 hours a day and was still tired. I talked to my Dr. and cutting out carbs has done this in 10 short weeks: Daily heartburn GONE..no more medicine which can harm my bones! Iron deficency GONE. I only need to sleep about 6.5 hours a day adn i have so much energy i have toruble with that sometimes. My BP reduced. My cholesteral REDUCED! i have no pain or inflamation. I work out 2 times a day now for 90 minutes total and i dropped 26.5 lbs without much effort. I would hardly say i am heading for the ER. I think people STILL belueve Atkins is all about 25 pieces of bacon and drinking glasses for melted cheese. I eat avacados for my good fats and use coconut oil. I eat lean meats mostly and red meat 1-2 times per week max. I have never felt better.

Exercise is always good with diet. You can tone with weights and still weigh the same or more, but you notice the difference in the way your clothes fit. Atkins is a lot of protein. Maybe you're taking in more calories than you should.

Yes, you can exercise while on Atkins, but I would avoid it while on induction simply because you need to adjust to the reduction in carbs. Restricting your carbs are quite beneficial. Anyone who debunks that doesn't truly understand the diet. Regardless of your medical condition, your doctor is a smart guy/gal. Any time you exercise, your muscles will retain water. They need fluid in order to heal. Also, any space on your body that is replaced by muscle will be heavier, so you can and will gain weight when you add exercise. So, instead of using the scale to measure loss, take out the tape measure and go by inches lost not lbs.

You didn't say how long you have bee ndoing Atkins. It is normal to go through periods of stagnation. Not knowing for sure, I would also consider this possibility. Good luck on your journey.

I do agree with Bee. I didn't exercise during the weightloss peiod. I began to exercise after losing 30 lbs.

Well, with all diets, you should be excercising, but my dad was on the Atkins diet for about 5 months or so and lost 65 pounds of what you called "fat" weight and he did not excercise very much during that period of time. So maybe you don't need to until you've lost all the weight you want to, then you can excercise to maintain a healthy weight.

You can simply just go for a mile walk of you might want to try out some yoga or simple excersise at home. Considering your condition, you can also google the atkins diet and how you can excersise with the diet. Or talk to your doctor.

Reading this I just have to share something because I spent several years going from diet to diet without seeing any results until I came across Pams magic plan (google it). Without doubt its the best weight loss that I have ever had and it is still working to this day.
