1) hamsters aren't used to people.
2) hamsters are used to being awake at night, when the lights are off.
3) hamsters need a place to burrow and hide.
4) If you gently feed the hamster special treats, like tiny pieces of lettuce, he will get used to you.

It can take a few months to tame a hamster depending on its personality. I find that if the ham is timid, put some food or a treat in a hamster ball or container and put that in the cage. When the hamster gets in the container then you can remove it from the cage and tip the hamster on your knee and handle it.
Do this every night for a few seconds. Also sit in the bath (with the plug in)! with the ham so it can climb over you.
Little and often and food rewards are the best way to tame - it does take time!

taming a hamster can take alot of time and patience but it is well worth it in the end:
a fully tamed hamster will crawl right onto your palm and let you pick it up and pet it, that is the goal of taming
here are some good sites that talk about how to tame your hamster:
http://www.tiscali.co.uk/lifestyle/pets/...
http://www.hamsterhideout.com/handling.h...
http://www.geocities.com/taffy3001/handl...
http://www.hamster-heaven.com/taming.htm...
basically the best way to tame a hamster is to do it at night because hamsters are nocturnal and first, always wash your hands before going anywhere near the cage (if your hand smells like food or another animal the hamster may bite), second start by just putting your hand in the cage and holding it still with a bit of treat on your palm (allow your hamster to explore your hand but do not move it!) after a few days of doing this, you may then graduate to the next step which is offering your hamster a bit of treat between your thumb and forefinger then gently petting them; after a few days of this you may graduate to the next step which is to put a cup in the cage and allow your hamster to climb in, then lift the cup out of the cage and allow your hamster to climb on your hands while you offer her a bit of treat, and eventually your hamster will be fully tamed. When your hamster is fully tamed you will be able to lower your hand in her cage and she will climb on top and allow you to lift her out regardless of whether or not you have food. It takes time and patience but it well worth it to have a properly tamed hamster! If you do not have the patience to properly tame your hamster, or if you feel your hamster is un-tamable then don't use your hand to chase and grab the hamster from her cage, instead use a cup to lift it out of the cage, and that way the hamster won't get scared and bite you.
good luck with your new ham-hamm
ps, right now I have two hamsters (one syrian and one dwarf, separate cages) that have both been fully tamed using this method; it took me about two months to fully tame them both however it may have taken them longer than most because they were rescued hamsters from neglectful homes

If it's a pretty young one, it 'll probably be necessary to hand tame it. It needs to be programmed for handling, and learning trust. They typically don't bite. Keep a treat or two in your palm, and condition it to be held. This shouldn't take that long at all. Hopefully, it's a pretty young one. Gender shouldn't matter. Good luck.
