SO I'm really considering going into the Marine Reserves. I actually enlist on Tuesday. I know how hard boot camp is going to be, and I'm preparing myself for the worst. I was told by my recruiter that the reserves will rarely ever go to Iraq or any other war zone, and that being a female, if I do get sent out, I won't even step foot onto the battlefield.

Things that my friends and family have told me:
- If you try to do two different things that two different drill instructors ask you, one of them will put you in a pit for not following THEIR order. And that the pit is filled with fleas and red fire ants.
- I WILL be sent to Iraq and possibly stay for up to 2 years
- I WILL have to go into combat, female or not
- The recruiters feed you a bunch of bullshit and will say anything just to get you to sign the dotted line

I really want to do this, but I want to remain INACTIVE all 4 years that I am enlisted and I do not want to go into combat of any sorts. What should I do?

We are at war and in wartime ANYONE who wears a uniform can be sent. Reservists go all the time - yes even the Marines my cousin is in MReserves and was sent.

That being said it is STILL an honorable job and if you feel you want to serve your country then go for it - it will probably be the hardest yet most rewarding thing you've ever done.

If you do not want to actually serve in the Marines ,
Best to NOT enlist ( reserves IS enlisting )
Most of those in Iraq are from the guard and reserves .
So people who just want the paycheck but not do the real marine or army work , are OUT of luck .
This "I really want to do this" is totally fake ,
If you wanted to , you would do the real thing ,
Not try to avoid the job (" I want to remain inactive") .

And I believe the 'possible up to 2 yrs' is understatement .
Some of them are there over 4 years .

your friends and family are twits. no pits in the MC. just the Cruicible. and no, you don't get to know what that is until you experience it.

Females are forbidden Combat Jobs. this does NOT mean you won't find yourself in the middle of a firefight someday.

Expect to go to Iraq or Afghanistan, regardless of MOS. you WILL deploy. period.

ALL contracts are for EIGHT YEARS. if you are unwilling to go wherever and whenever your country tells you. then DO NOT ENLIST. you do NOT have the luxury of saying that you don't want to actually EARN your pay/stripes.
Reservists ARE being sent to the Litter Box for 12 month tours and longer.

Let's squelch your rumors:

The DIs will probably ask you to do conflicting things, it's all mind games. Under no circumstances will they be allowed to put you anywhere that would cause you bodily harm or cause you bodily harm yourself.

You may be in Iraq for up to two years, but Marine deployments for active duty work differently than Army. Their deployments are only for six months at a time.

Yes, you will go into combat. It won't necessarily be breaking down doors and apprehending insurgents, but you will.

The BS from recruiters, is almost entirely true. That's their job, to get the dotted line.

Bottom line: If you don't want to go into combat, don't walk in to MEPS on Tuesday.

If you are in a deployable unti, then yes you will go to war. If your unit does not deploy, then no you will not. If you DID joined the Reserves then you already know what unit you are assigned to.

Iraq is only a 15 month tour for active duty, it is 12 or Reserves and NG but your unit will go for training of 6 months or more before you deploy.

You will not be INACTIVE all 4 years, I can guarantee that... we are at war -- you may not see direct combat, but you will likely spend at least 1 of your four years in either Afghanistan or Iraq... and you have a good chance of being engaged by the enemy (indirect fire, IED, or direct fire) even if you're not in the "front lines".

Honestly we need as many troops as we can get to go fight and it is probably true that recruiters will lie to anybody to get you in the Military so quite frankly if you are worried about going to war I really don't see the point enlisting. but if you still want to enlist go to college first so you can become eligible to become an officer. Officers get more privileges and have authority over enlisted men.

If you can not see yourself going into combat then dont enlist. We are at war and marines and soldiers are being killed everyday in Iraq and Afganistan. The longest deployment you'll see right now would be 18 months. Yes reserve units deploy. My advice is for you to go to college and get a civilian job.

Wow....why, exactly are you joining? Education benefits? If you want to remain INACTIVE for 4 years, I highly recommend you look elsewhere. The military (all branches, including reserves), have the possibility of being called to duty. If you don't want that duty, then leave it to people who do! Best of luck to you!

that's what the reserves are, they respond to the call of duty when there country needs them the most. So yes they are sent to war.
