Contrary to common belief, Vista can run on 512mb RAM, and quite successfully at that.
I have Vista Home Premium running superbly on 512mb RAM, 2.4ghz Pentium 4 Processor.NVIDIA GeeForce FX 5200 graphics.
It handles the 3D Aero with ease.
You have no chance whatsoever of running Vista on 256mb RAM, it would refuse to even install
Also Home Basic is a total waste of money,as you are not getting any of what Vista has to offer.
Home Premium is the one to go for. Take no notice of those who say you need at least 2gb RAM, this is nowhere near necessary unless you are into serious gaming, which I am not.
Vista will run as fast or slow depending on what you want it to do.
Its all about Processor speed Graphics and RAM at the end of the day.
Microsoft recommend 1gb RAM, but ive managed to to tosh that by sucessfully running it on 512mb, and yes for all the doubters out there, ITS FAST !!!!!

Apparently you can run MS Vista Home Basic with 512MB as NewEgg actually has four for sale with that amount of RAM (first link below has the lowest priced option available). I would question how big the pagefile is set for but it appears to be capable of running with that little memory. Many of the systems offered though have 1GB to 2GB of RAM for typical usage.
If your system has an integrated video card, definitely increase beyond 512MB or you'll find that performance will really suffer once shared video memory is in use.
Memory has become relatively inexpensive so you might want to consider adding the max for your system. A quick check on NewEgg for 1GB of RAM and sorting on price shows they offer it starting at about $43 (NOTE: I didn't get into looking at quality or compatibility as I don't know any of your system details).

You can not upgrade memory via software. You'll have to physically install additional memory. While Microsoft says you can run Vista Home Basic on 512MB of memory most people won't recommend running Vista(any version) with less than 1GB of memory.

There are too many record issues, the two from customers and Microsoft. the 1st provider %. isn't scheduled the the 2d quarter of 2008. i does no longer positioned funds into it till then. in case you have $70 i might purchase an o.e.m replica of XP domicile off ebay and run it till SP one million for Vista comes out. I trust the 2d poster you're able to have minimum of 1gb of RAM, regardless of XP at present. IMO it's going to be various years earlier Vista is as stable a XP is acceptable now. stable luck.

You can, but only using a modified winsetup.dll that is downloaded and, if you have the disc, copy its contents to a flash drive, put the modified dll in the sources folder on the drive, allow it to overwrite the original, and go back and run setup.exe, if you're on xp then go ahead, if its an upgrade dvd you copied the contents off of, run setup on the USB stick and select upgrade and you are good to go.

That is the quoted minimum, you really need 1G. There is no software for this you need to buy more ram.

I'd say you need 2 GB of physical RAM (not that software emulation nonsense) and one year while Mike Rosoft irons out its idiocies before you get anywhere.

512MB for Vista? try at least 1 GB. Go with 2 GB if you want it to run properly.
MS may say 512, but that wont even run XP!
