A Glock, Springfield XD or a Ruger and why

Glock is no more or no less than Ruger or the XD, just as the XD is no more or less to Glock and Ruger. This is what it comes down to. What feels better in your hand and on your eyes. Me personally I like XDs grip feel better than Glock or Ruger. (thinner grip). The XD also in my opinion has better sights. I shoot better with the XD over the others. (I have shot a Glock 23 and a ruger P89)
All three are working horses. All three are not likely to jam or snag on a round.
Why I chose both my XDs (9mm ported, .45ACP Tactical). I like the added safeties of the XD. Both Glock and XDs have the USA trigger safety, but the XD has the grip safety like a 1911 and the XD also has to sight safeties. There is a load indicator on top of the slide that pops up when a round is in the chamber and the striker indicator that tells you the gun is hot and ready to fire. Glock does not have those three bonuses. And like I said, feel.
Rugers you can by with a manual safety or a decocker only where you can decock the gun with a round still in the chamber.

Since you didn't specify which Glock, XD or Ruger, I am assuming your decision is being based on little more than reputation. Any Glock, Springfield or Ruger will be a safe and serviceable combat weapon. If you are looking for a target weapon I wouldn't suggest any of these (except the Glock for Glock Matches). I would urge you to not choose any firearm based only on the recommendation of others. While there are some firearms I would not recommend, the fact is that most people have favorites and they want you to love them as much as they do. Go to a range where you can rent guns, borrow them from your friends, you'd be surprised that some people will even let a stranger borrow their weapon for a few shots. Just handle enough to know the one or ones you love--after all you're the one who is going to have to live with it.

I personally wouldn't got for a Glock. I find them too light in the hand and that causes a fair bit of muzzle flip when you fire. And besides, I personally find the takedown to be a bit awkward. One less step when reassembling, but I think it's a pain to take apart.

Rugers, I don't know at all, so I won't comment.

Springfield XD is a good choice. I own a .40 cal XD Tactical and I like it. I fired it in 9mm as well and there's next to no recoil. It's quite a bit heavier than a Glock, so recoil is a lot less and it makes for nice quick target acquisition.

Sig Sauers are good. What I like most with them is the double-action trigger with the decocking lever. Makes it nice and safe to have a round up the spout and the hammer down.

The Beretta 92 is largely the same. I like the way it handles, but the safety/decocking lever can be a bit awkward. Gotta remember to take it off after you've decocked.

CZ's shoot good, in my opinion, but design-wise I find that the slide release is too far from the handle and I either need to take my off-hand up to release it, or turn my firing hand all around the handle to get it to work.

Or, if you're into the whole classic single-action pistol, go for the Browning Hi-Power. It's tough, reliable, and easy to use. Not ideal for conceal carry, but it's a tried, tested and true design that's been copied all over the world.

I have a glock and I love it, very accurate and simple to break down and clean.

My Mom and brother have Sprinffield XD and they are good for the price (Compared to a glock)

I also have a Ruger .38 special and that is a great gun, but it is a revolver.

A good friend of mine shoots several thousand rounds a year and his old boss is one of the Ut-most authorites on hand guns in the U.S. He has written several books, they both shoot Sig's and I had used his and it is nice.

Personally I like my glock, but I will likely soon have a Sig.

Are you looking to shoot, and how much do you want to spend? For the price of the gun and cost of 9mm rounds just go with the Springfield. Comes with 3 clips, a speed loader, and a quick release hip holster.

Glock because it is by far the most reliable auto-loader on the planet. It is like the AK-47 of handguns. It is easiest of the three to field strip for regular cleaning. Don't be fooled into buying the Springfield because it is American made. It is actually a Croation engineered and designed pistol, that Springfield purchased the rights to. Why buy an imitator when you can by the original. Glock magazines are the highest capacity of most auto loaders as well. Glock is also the most common pistol used around the world so it is cheap and easy to buy replacement parts. My first gun was an HK and Glock was my second. After a few years I only used my Glock for recreational shooting and home defense. Don't let Glock haters sway your decision with vague statements like "A Glock feels like a toy, or has a bad trigger" If that was true the rest of the world would not use them. Good Luck

It'll depend on what you're using it for & what your budget is...

Typically - Rugers are the "least expensive" of those three you mentioned. But they're a bit BLOCKY and I know lots of folk who don't like the look or feel of them. But they're decent.

Springfield is a nice piece - but I prefer the 1911 in .45-acp if I was going to drop money down on a Springfield.

Glocks are tried & true... and lots of people swear by them - personally, I've heard some folk complain about the grips and others (myself included) prefer a gun with a heavier frame.

... another company to consider (slightly less expensive than a Glock - but more than a Ruger) is Magnum Research - they make the Desert Eagle handgun & have "Baby-Eagles" in 9mm as well. (I've had one for more than a decade & love it)

My first choice would be the Glock, I own a 19 and have never had a misfire (shot approx. 2000 rds w/ my 19 and a couple hundred w/ various other Glock models). It's easy to field strip, clean, and put back together. If you don't like the Glock grip angle then go with the XD. I own an XD 45, and like it a lot. Also, easy to strip and clean and they have a 1911 style grip. I've had one failure to feed with my XD and 2 failure to feeds with rentals (a 45 and a 40). I really like Ruger revolvers but their semi-autos are a pain to take apart when compared to Glocks.

CZ SP01 or any CZ75. Simply speaking, they are the best full sized semi auto 9mm in my experience. I've shot all of the above, wouldn't consider a Ruger of any sort, Springfield's "kit" impresses me and shoots well, I own a Glock 19 and love it, but the full size CZ SP01 is my favorite. 18+1, night sights, perfect ergonomics and 100% reliability. Also slightly less weight than a Beretta (or feels that way.)

Glock are accurate and entirely reliable. Personally I don't like the Springfield and the Ruger just doesn't do it for me, I love their revolvers but not their semi-autos. What about a Sig? Well made and accurate too.
