Weird, maybe. Unusual, certainly. Delicious, definitely.

Food in bathrooms grosses me out.
But, to each their own.
I wouldn't eat the mints for sure, and unless I was having a severe chocolate craving wouldn't touch the chocolate either.
There was a report a couple years ago about the number of germs including e coli found on toothbrushes that are left out uncovered in the bathroom. Unless you close the lid before you flush the germs are thrown up into the air. YUCK!
If I find the report, I will come back and post the link so you can print it off and give to your friends mom as she is trying to be nice but actually contaminating the food!
Outside the door would be more sanitary, but as I said, to each their own.
Edit: I could not find the actual report but here is a link to Fox News and their health reporter comments on the germs from flushing being all over the bathroom.
Maybe just print it off and anonymously mail it to her! That way she doesn't get mad at you again.

The chocolates are definitely a little odd, it sounds more like something that you'd put on a table in a foyer as someone was entering the house. I can kind of understand the mints...you might step into the restroom and be thinking of the sorts of things you do in the restroom at home (such as brush your teeth) and realize your breath is not the freshest, so it does seem rather hospitable to have a bowl of mints there.

well i have a pretty good idea why she put these things in the bathroom its kind of cute in a really weird sort of way. first dinner mints are natural gas relievers they help sooth your stomach and bowels and make for better digestion, don't believe me look it up. so next time you're out on a date don't forget to grab some mints it helps. and now the chocolate which is the more ironic part i don't know if you're aware but chocolate is a natural laxative if you eat too much you could give yourself diarrhea. i know none of this sounds very credible but its true when my niece had colic we melted dinner mints in water to help with her painful gas and i used to be a nurses assistant and let me tell you ive had more than my fare share of old people having way to much chocolate at their disposal. if you still don't believe it ask a doctor. i don't know whether she was consciously trying to make a point about the chocolate and mints but its a cute to have it there as long as its not in a place where its getting nasty also it may remind people to wash their hand before sticking them in the bowls. i dunno but i thought it was cute what she did.

Some of the answers are hilarious.
It's weird. I'm all for fresh breathe after a meal but if she's that big on hospitality for guests then put it by the door along with toothpicks like restaurants do.
Cute soaps and lotions are nice for a guest in the bathroom - not food. That's just really disgusting.

Believe it or not these candies are being covered with feces and loads of germs every day. In fact I would venture to say that those two bowls would be the most dangerous health hazards in the house let alone the bathroom.
Aside from the obvious of peoples hands being in the bowls they are constantly being splashed by microscopic droplets that get blown into the air every time water runs the toilet is flushed or just your average sneezing and nose blowing.
It wouldn't matter if she mounted them 8 ft off the floor, they would still be contaminated.
This family obviously has no perception of hygiene.

Think about this: When a man goes in there and urinates, molecules of his urine float into the air (as evidenced by the smell) and then come to land on everything within the confines of the bathroom. The same is true if he takes a sit-down job and there's any odor. That's not just "gas," but actual microscopic bits of Number Two floating around the air and coming to rest on EVERYTHING.
You wash your hands, which is all well and good, but then you pick up a wrapped piece of candy from the top of the bowel (where all those wonderful molecules have settled) and it gets on your hand. Then you use those hands to open the wrapper and pop it into your mouth, don't you?
Explain it to her like THAT.

It's Pretty Strange To Have Them In The Bathroom, But Some People Feel That Having Treats In The Bathroom Is Somewhat Fancy, I Would Just Try To Forget About It.

It is unsanitary for the food to be in the bathroom, even if it is by the sink.
You have to remember though, people who don't wash their hands can still pick it up from the bowls even if they're placed in the hallway.
Still, it was inappropriate for you to tell her you thought it was inappropriate for them to be in the bathroom. She is right in telling you to be grateful...you shouldn't try to dictate to anyone how they should do a good deed. I understand how gross this good deed may be, but still.
In the end, it's her decision and her home.
Just don't take from the bowls. I bet other people don't either for the same reasons we think it's gross and when she sees them constantly full, maybe she'll get a hint.

That is gross, there are a lot of germs flying around in there, and weird. But it's also a kind gesture and not worth confronting her about. She's trying. Maybe she wants her house to look like a 4-star hotel?

I can kinda understand the mints...I mean, the guests can't really brush their teeth and might need a breath freshener. But the Hersheys in there are a little odd.
She's happy with it. Don't worry about it.
