Apocalypse Now while an epic movie in its own right it by far the worse of these war movies, no other Vietnam War movie protrats Americans in such a negative light.
Hamburger is a factual movie that was dramized to an accaptable degree and protrayed the general events very well. It failed however to indicate that there were two other American Battalions fighting to take control of that hill.
We Were Soldiers (based on the book 'We were soldiers once and young') is by far the best of these three movies. It is a true story, it tells the story of a Battalion Commander who trained his Battalion to be the best and survive the test of battle. Sadly, they didn't tell the tale of the other American Battalion that was torn to shreds that very same day.

How could you leave "Platoon" out of this list of Good Vietnam Movies?
I feel Apocalypse Now can not be compared to the other two in this list becasuse of it's general story line. Yeah it does take place in Vietnam but doesn't follow the same subject. The other two have the common theme of one particular battle in Vietnam. Both We were Soldiers and Hamburger Hill were great movies! It's hard to say which one of the two are better. Apocalypse now, also a Great movie but I would set that in a separate category.
Also what do you want to guage the best movie off of? Story, special effects, original script, acting, directing?
I don't know how to answer this question, all three are great films. Each has something over the other, but theatrically over all they are all great.
Someone mentioned "Deer Hunter." There's another cinematic masterpiece.

There was quite a bit of license taken with Apocalypse Now and Hamburger Hill to make the movie more "saleable" to the public. Apocalypse Now was a work of pure fiction, and while Hamburge Hill was based on fact it appeared to have been "pumped up" to make it more of an action pic.
When We Were Soldiers is closer to the truth than the other two, although I am sure there was some license taken here too it is closer to the real story.

I liked "We Were Soldiers". Read the book, it seemed more based on the book.
Problem with "Hamburger Hill". Read that book, too. But in the movie it seemed like some American was getting killed every minute during the last hour of the movie. Watch a program on PBS last night about the 101st. The battle lasted 8 days and there were only 40 American dead.

I myself out of the 3 think that We Were Soldiers is the better movie. I have talked with Vets who served during this time and they too have stated this was a very good movie that did justice to LT Col Moore.
No matter what movie is playing or what song is singing.. we need to remember the men and women who serve.. and who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.. and never forget our POW/MIA...

that's a toss-up between Apocalypse Now and finished steel Jacket. Apocalypse now could be genius. a visit into the darker reaches of a guy's soul. it is have been given an fairly jap philosophical view which I appreciate. The holiday up the river replaced into approximately Martin Sheen's chraracter's experience into himself to confront his very own demons (not probable a conflict action picture, i assume). finished steel Jacket is likewise genius. Kubrick replaced right into a grasp at turning tragedy into humor and absurdity.

My vote would go to "Full Metal Jacket" ! Having seen the movies you mentioned, I believe that my selection depicted life as a recruit and a combat Marine as realistically as Hollywood is able to do.
