Like most modern inventions the GFCI was invented by a corporate team. They were at Pass & Seymour. This is a photo from the 30th anniversary of that invention.

I saw someone put the circuit in an old book, I think a book more than 30 years old, but it was not integrated into a wall plug, and not patented. and I can't remember which book...
