Mythology concerns only the supernatural aspects of a religion. A history of mythology would cover the development of beliefs and their related myths.

A history of religion would include the historical interactions between adherents of the religion and the rest of the world.

Myth: gods. Religion: people.

mythology = known to be written fiction
religion = written as if true, and believed to be true by those who
follow it.

Some believe that some or most of religions are made up (mythology) but that is a personal belief, not an established fact.

Well, first of all, in modern religious terms, there is no implication that a "myth" is false. However, the mythical "narrative" aspect of faith is one small snipit of the overall picture. There's Orthapraxy, which studies religious praxis, and the study of the societal, sociological dimensions, and the study of the corporal, institutional aspect of faith. Religion is not a collection of stories; it is the identity of peoples.

Religion is based on truth and mythology is based on fairy tales. Unless, of course, you happen to be an atheist, which I will assume you are. Then, nothing is real. What a way to live!

religion comes from mythology.
religion is the practice of rituals based on belief in the supernatural/mythology. one preceeds the other.

however the interpretations of "mytyology" of the ancients is often pathetic at best. modern man acts as if the ancients were stupid and didn't know what things were. did the ancients make up half humanoid half animals creatures or did they exist? according to the bible and the book of enoch and other ancient texts, they did exist. were the ancients all on drugs? I doubt it.
