What could happen if my roommate gets into an accident with another car while driving my truck and I'm not even riding along and my insurance just happened to be cancelled last January? What are my options?

You are screwed.

Every person that drives your vehicle must be covered under your policy.

your insurance "just happened" to be cancelled 8 months ago??? Forget about the roommate. What if you would have gotten in an accident??

Insurance is to protect you, but mostly, it's to protect other people from your negligence.

If you don't have insurance, and your roommate does, the other injured party will sue BOTH of you. I sure hope you have a savings account. If you don't have money to pay, they can take your car, house, any assets, take your paycheque, suspend your drivers licence, etc etc.

You are beyond irresponsible.

January!!?? You haven't had coverage since January??!! What? Are you crazy!? You are taking a big, BIG risk - or don't you even care about yourself and/or other people?

If anything happens, God forbid, you would be up the creek - BIG TIME!! You could conceivably have your salary garnished like forever to pay for damages or injuries as a result of your carelessness; you could lose your license privileges (not that you'd care - your obvious disdain for license requirements is obvious!); you might even possibly do some serious jail time!!

Your roommate should have better sense than to even ask to borrow your truck....

Good luck; you're going to need it...

Hopefully your roommate has their own insurance. If he does then his liability insurance should pay the claim to the other motorist. If the roommate doesn't have insurance the other car driver/owner can come back to either of you to reclaim any damages.

Unless your roommate has insurance that covers him in any vehicle he drives, you both get stuck with the payments. You, also get ticketed for allowing an uninsured driver to operate your vehicle. Your roommate could become your cellmate.

i let a boyfriend drive my car and he side swipped someone and they sued us both! thank god i had insurance. they finally settled for what the insurance offered them.
but if you don't have insurance they will come after you both.

the lesson i learned is to never let anyone drive my car!
