I was pondering the use of satellites. If satellites can "beam" information down to Earth and because of the distance, it sends things in a "cone" shape, much like a flashlight is able to beam light in a cone shape, can't we apply the same physics to an object sent up to cast a shadow on both polar caps to help prevent polar melting? Or anywhere else that would benefit from such an endeavor, such as Greeland?

We're in deep, deep trouble if people are so freaked out by global warming that they're dreaming up ways like this to stop the ice caps from melting.

btw - Don't you know? As soon as a Democrat gets elected and fixes this global warming problem, caused by the godless Republicans, the ice caps won't be melting any more.

It might be, but it wouldn't solve the melting problem. Light comes in from the sun with a lot of energy. It loses some of that passing through the atmosphere. If you reflect it back into space, with a mirror, or with a bright surface like an ice cap, less will get back out because some no longer has enough energy to escape. Whatever amount is trapped here eventually degrades to heat as it continues to lose energy.

Pretty thoughtful question though. You just wouldn't need to position your sun shields over the poles. They'd probably do more good closer to the equator.
How much energy is lost depends on the gases in the air. Certain gases cause more energy to be lost. Those are the ones you hear called "greenhouse gases". As they build up, more and more energy gets trapped inside the earth's atmosphere. So the problem isn't caused by just the light that comes in over the poles, it's ALL of it.

I'll have to search to find the link.. but this spring a I read an article on http://www.sciencedaily.com/ about how they were putting together schemes for counteracting global warming... one scheme was (using technology we already have) launching millions of micro satellites into the outer earth orbit between the earth and the sun to act as a shield and lower the % of sunlight that reaches the earth.. effectively cooling the planet. It's a worse case scenario though and not something they plan to do unless we have no other choice.

I think anything is possible...
Sure beats sitting around wondering who or what country is going to blow up someone, don't you think?..If most of the physic and science people would get it together..be amazed at what we can actually do...
In answer to part of your question...we need to create a shadow over the equator since that is where most heat is generated...in the meantime, Scientists! Get to work!...Before we are doomed....

Rosie O'Donnell or Michael Moore could make a shadow over them.

that would be a very difficult job. i think we should better try and help control global warming, reducing the number of trees cut or plant more trees, and so many more....and all of you are well aware of that.
