instead of just a sound recorder just use a webcam which has audio built in. IR sensors will work with that.

Whether you're bird watching, baby sitting, or spying, the following links should help, but most assume that you already have a motion sensor and an audio or video recorder with compatible connections/jacks.

BTW, not all motion sensors have such connections/jacks (e.g., the motion sensor that triggers a driveway light to go on), although, presumably, there should be a way for a knowledgeable electrician to "hack" into such systems.
