I am planning on doind my first duathlon next weekend and I'm a little nervous. It's a short one 2, 20, 2 but since I've never done transitions before, I worried about screwing up. Any pointers? Things someone would only know if they had completed one. I appreciate any feedback!

My advice is to take your time and stay organized. You will save time by taking deliberate actions rather than rushing through and making mistakes. Since the run is fiarly short, try to be as ready for your bike ride during the first run. Wear your gloves and shades if you can. Then change shoes and put on that helmet and you're ready to go. Be sure not to make a mess in your transition area because before the second run you will need to find your shoes and go.

After all is said and done, just be sure to have fun. Enjoy this experience and take what you learn into the next one.

Congratulations on taking on a Duathlon. Transitions are very easy. Lay out your gear in order and practice a few times. In the first transision besure to put your helmet on first and buckle it.

I run with a hat and Glasses so coming into T1 take off the hat, put on your helmet, change shoes, be sure to put your running shoes away neatly for T2 and go out of the transition. Coming back in, take off your helmet, change shoes and grab your hat on your way out of t2.

To speed things up be sure to get speed laces for your running shoes

keep your helmet on in the transition area once your with your bike, some races are particular about safety and will DQ you for not having it on before you even start running your bike out of the T area. unless your changing shoes you shouldn't have a lot to worry about. I run with my biking gloves in the pockets of my shorts or jersey so i can have them on already when I close in on the T area. keep your helmet on your handlebars so that it's ready to go on your head as soon as you get to your bike. hope you race well!!
