Ok, so if it's symbolic, maybe other parts of the bible you take as literal fact are also symbolic.

JR and Oldguy: "old" or "ancient" doesn't mean that he was the serpent from Genesis.

The connection with Revelations is very tenuous. The word serpent is mentioned numerous times in the bible and obviously does not refer to Satan, as in Gensis 49.17: "Dan will be a serpent by the roadside, "

Emma: Most translations don't say "original". They say "old" or "ancient". That's totally different.

Perhaps it's a symbollic serpent, you're right, and instead it is purely Satan. He was the first liar in the Bible, so, taking this, we already know Satan was the first sinner, when he says, if you eat of the fruit, you will not surely die. Not only does he lie, but he calls God a liar! That fits together.
Many people do not know and cannot make the connection to what I'm about to tell you. Here, take these scenarios from Genesis:
When they speak of Eve and the fruit in the Bible, it says she "desired" and it was "pleasing" and afterwards, Adam and Eve felt "ashamed" so they covered their privates.
Now first of all, if you honestly didn't know any better, and you ate an actual piece of fruit, and you weren't supposed to, if anything, wouldn't you cover your MOUTH? Why your privates? This makes no sense.
Continuing, it says the serpent "beguiled" Eve. One definition of beguiling is to wholly seduce.
For her punishment, for eating the "fruit", God says her child bearing pains will be multiplied. Why would God do this if it were literal fruit? Are you making my connection?
Later on, Eve conceives the boys. She has Cain and then in the Hebrew translations, it says she "continues in birth" and has Abel. She had TWINS! It doesn't say this, but it's obvious. They brought offerings at the same time, grew up around the same time.. Other references in the Bible refer to Cain as the Son of Satan as well....
What really happened in the Garden of Eden?

Revelation 12:9
9The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.
Note: "That Ancient Serpent"
Update: You're wrong.
archaios - original, ancient, old, hat has been from the beginning.
Its clear that the serpent was Satan. What other serpent is there because theres only one serpent thats should be cast out of Heaven, and thats Satan. Also, a serpent is a snake, and theres no other reason why some other snake would be cast out of Heaven.
Update 2: Again, theres only one serpent that was worthy of being cast out of Heaven and thats Satan. A serpent is a snake, which is why there has been many of them quoted in the Bible. Satan just used a snake to talk through Eve.

Revelation 20:1-3 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven with the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he seized the dragon, the original serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. 3 And he hurled him into the abyss and shut [it] and sealed [it] over him, that he might not mislead the nations anymore until the thousand years were ended. After these things he must be let loose for a little while.
Revelation 12:9 So down the great dragon was hurled, the original serpent, the one called Devil and Satan, who is misleading the entire inhabited earth; he was hurled down to the earth, and his angels were hurled down with him.
God’s principal opposer, Satan, is referred to as “the original serpent,” evidently because of his employing the literal serpent in Eden as his means of communication with the woman. (Ge 3:1-15) As “the original serpent,” he is also the progenitor in a spiritual sense of other opposers; hence Jesus’ classification of such ones as “serpents, offspring of vipers.”—Mt 23:33; compare Joh 8:44; 1Jo 3:12.

The term "serpent" is translated "ha-nachash", a verbal meaning either to "divinate"; "to polish";, or "to shine". It is the third meaning that correlates exactly to Lucifer "The Bright and Morning star" and also with 2 Corinthians 11:14- "And no wonder. For Satan transforms himself into an angel of light". Er, "false-light", that is; deception. Yup. Lots of "educated/intelligent" people fall for that crap, now don't they??

Satan was cast down before Adam and Eve were placed in The Garden.... the "serpent" who tempted Eve(and Adam) was clearly of the forces of evil... one of those cast down with satan... if not satan Himself... as this was the first assault on mankind by the forces of evil it is reasonable to conclude that satan himself would be the one to take the lead...as he had the greatest hatred for God and His Creation... in any case... satan orchestrated it

It is a known fact that Satan was a sales rep for the world's first apple company. He would dress up like a snake or even wear a Nixon mask if it meant he could get a sale. Sneaky little devil.

Now... what makes you think this serpent is not Satan?
