Didn't read the others answers so don't know if it was stated before. We do most of our dreaming while in REM sleep and the dreams we remember are likely to be a dream you are having as you exit REM sleep. So they are dreams we have either while we are waking or right before we awake.

It's difficult to give a sound explanation for this since science only knows about 1-2% of what's actually happening in the brain. Lots of info on the brain are therefor assumptions instead of facts.

Personally.... I Guess it has to do with the way our memory works.

All info we get, including dreams, first enters short term memory which can hold only a few items for a short period of time.

When the info given is considered important enough it travels from short term to long term memory, which can store enormously more info for a much longer time. The more info impresses us, the better it's better stored in and... retrieved from long term memory.

Dreams that don't really impress us won't be remembered.
In the same way... most people can't exactly tell what they've eaten for dinner in the last month (or even week). However, they do remember what they've eaten during that certain special evening in that special restaurant, sometimes even 20-30 years later.

By presenting the short term memory with the same info again and again, the info is also better stored in longterm memory.

A re-occurring dream that didn't impress us at first can become more important after it's been dreamed for a few times, just... like we all (well most) know 6x7=42 without having to calculate it first.

Remembering dreams is the same as anything else you need to remember, you need to train yourself how, the same as you need to train yourself how to study in school.....
