1. Are you able to exercise? Can you go outside and take a walk? If you can, find out by asking around through local church groups or your city rec center about a walking group that meets regularly and join them. The exercise is nice, talking to a regular group of people is nicer. The exercise will help your body relax, and you will sleep better at night, 'those old people' may have some ideas on how to help manage your depression.
2. Do you take a multi-vitamin? Some medications can zap your body and deplete it of nutrients - a multi-vitamin can at least replace some of the vitamins zapped by medications. Some people don't believe in them, but I've had some measure of success with them. Vitamin World has a good selection of multi-vitamins, so does Trader Joe's.
3. Are you able to get out and volunteer? Helping others in need helps take your mind off your own problems. If you are not allergic, volunteer at your local animal shelter. Animals give back so much love, just petting them will help you think of other things.
4. Is there something you've always wanted to do, or learn, but never could because of time constraints? Why not use your time now to go to the library and read books on subjects you are curious about. Or maybe now is a good time to pull out and practice that guitar that's been sitting in your closet for so many years. And there's no law that says you can't go in to the kid's section of the library and read all of the picture books just for fun.
5. See if your town has some sort of support group for people with your condition. You are not alone in your suffering. There are others who suffer, also. Your phone book should have listings for meetings of support groups.
6. Get out or get a copy of your local newspaper and find out free things to do in your town. You may be surprised by how many things are going on around you.
7. Save up the money for a trip to Hawaii to learn to surf. So many surfers find zen in riding the waves...
8. get outside and start planning and planting a garden of zen and peace. just digging, weeding, and breathing the fresh air will help clear your head.
