In response to a recent question, I received several "quotes" from various Popes. I took the time to do a little research on them. Tell me what you think of what I found:

Quote 1: "The Pope is Christ in office, ...... we bow down before the holy father as we would before Christ himself" (1870 proclamation)

Notice here that there is no real name given. The only reference is "1870 proculamation" by whom? The closest thing I can find to a real reference to this quote is in anti-Catholic literature, saying that it was said during Vatican I. There is no footnote given. In other words, it has all the earmarks of a manufactured quote.

The second quote is this:

"We hold upon this earth the place of God almighty" Pope Leo XIII.

This one's real, from the 1894 document "Praeclara Gratulationis Publicae." The subject is Christian unity.

Understand, however, that when the Pope says "We" (plural) he is speaking of the entire Church, through the office of her servant (the Pope).

Since we believe that Jesus is God, and that the Church (which is on earth) is the very mystical body of Christ, it is a theological necessity that that "We hold the place of God on earth."

The third quote:

"The Pope is not only representative of Jesus Christ, but he is Jesus Christ himself" Pope Pius X

This one seems only to exist in anti-Catholic works.

The forth quote:

"Does the Pope speak? It is Jesus himself who speaks" Pius X.

Ditto.

And the fifth:

"You know that I am the holy father, the representative of God on earth, the vicar of Christ, which means that I am God on earth."

Supposedly Pius XI said the. Pius XI?! Can you believe the calumniating going on here? Once again the internet seems altogether ignorant of this quote outside of anti-Catholic sources.

Why do these Protestants, who obviously are manufacturing these quote because they believe the Church is an unholy cult, think they will get away with lying?

Buncha egotists with delusions of divinity, huh?

I always heard the pope described as "the first among equals."

The protestants will go to any length to misrepresent Catholic teaching.

The quote from Leo XIII sounds accurate though.
Why? because it states the truth, and he speaking of himself as the vicar of Christ. He's using the plural "majestatis" all popes and kings used them until John Paul I.
Even if I doubt that the present pope would express it in those terms.

Really I think that the Protestant bigots are exaggerating and reading things into the quotes that are not Catholic teaching.

I do have a question for you: WHO is funding those idiot sites?

Indeed, they prey on the ignorant and gullible (and sad to say, no shortage of them in the internet). I detect a sinister plot, quite frankly. I know the fundies are in the mix.

Are there other groups out there? Hmmm ....

You are quite right. Most people quote here-say and don't bother to check up on its veracity. It's nothing more than gossip.
