I'd go with the 357 mag, lots of power, good knockdown and velocity.
45 has good hard-hitting heavy rounds but less speed.
40's are a good round, but I don't have too much experience with them.

Which is the stronger gun? That's easy. Of those you've listed the .357 Magnum (loaded with 125 grain semi-jacketed hollow points and fired out of a 4" barrel) is recognized as the best man-stopper. The .40 S & W nearly duplicates the .45 acp performance (at least on paper) so I would rank them according to stopping power as follows: .357 Mag. first, followed by the .45 acp and finally the .40 S & W.
Or were you asking about the .357 Sig??? This one looks promising enough that the highway patrol has switched to it from the .45 acp. Reason: It is so close in power to the old .357 Mag. revolver round and it is much better at defeating barriers (car glass n metal) than the .40 or the .45 acp.
Best.

These are all different rounds and each is better its own ways. The 357 Magnum is a good caliber because it packs a lot of punch and very little recoil, the 40 was created in response to the speed problems of 45's but take down problems of the 9mm, it is in my oppinion on of the best. A 45 can be a great gun for short range because of the larger sabot but when it was concieved the makers neglected to increase the cartridge size so the 45 is slightly short range and dramatically at ranges that both 357, and S&W 40 can reach without any slope. I personally prefer the XD 10mm and the S&W 40 bot have great takedown power and decent velocity. If you really want powerful though go for the Smith&Wesson 500.

.357 mag 180 gr. jkt. HC 1059 fps 38,400 C.U.P
.40 S&W 180 gr. jkt HP 1048 fps 23,500 C.U.P
.45 ACP 185 gr. jkt HP 1008 fps 17,700 C.U.P
These are based on reloads not factory loads using different powders.
The .357 mag and .40 S&W give a better chance of a complete pass through on a intruder. You really dont want a complete pass through. If the bullet doesnt exit then all of the energy produced is left inside the target meaning more impact. The .45 acp isnt as fast but due to the large bullet circumfrence most all of the energy produced is absorbed by the target. That gives greater stopping power.
The .45 acp was/is a military weapon.

What do you mean when you say stronger? The 45acp is the standard and has been the standard for a personal defense weapon for nearly 100 years. The 357 magnum was created in the thirties to deal with gangsters wearing body armor. The 40 cal S&W is a down loaded 10mm, a 10mm short. If you want maximun power the 500 S&W magmun is the ticket if you can handle the recoil and blast.

Why do Law Enforcement & Government Agencies around the Globe pick the 40 over anything else for choce of sidearm use, more rounds the a 357 and less recoil (and muzzle flash) then a 45.

.357 Magnum and .40 S&W round have a working pressure of about 31,000-34,000 PSI. The .45 Auto working pressure is slighly half of the former, around 16,000-18,000 psi.

The 357 is the strongest of those you listed, but if you really want power get a 10mm, preferably a Glock model 20.

Why not look to what the manufacturer says?
Remington lists their ammunition muzzle velocities and foot lbs of energy:
357mag: 165 grain load - 610 ft/lbs energy
40S&W: 155 grain load - 499 ft/lbs energy
45Aacp: 185 grain load - 534 ft/lbs energy
These are also their best performing loads I listed. You can also find "hotter" ammunition from doubletap ammo.

a .357 125 grainer is the most powerful hands down but the .40 comes close the .45 just slings really heavy bullets slow and that just wont do 4 combat.
