Square looking beetle with the top down? Most definitely a Thing. Ghias are far too sleek to be called square and Squarebacks didn't come as convertibles.

Probably a VW Thing.

VW only had two other convertibles at the time- the Beetle convertible and Karmann Ghia convertible (however, the Ghia was a smooth coupe). You can see the boxy Thing down on the source below.

If that isn't the thing (no pun intended), it might have been a Rabbit/Golf cabrio, but those were only made starting in the 80's. There's one in the second source.

If you want to see all the original models, see thesamba.com

Karmann Ghia is the only other convertible VW made prior to the Rabbits in the mid-'70's. But the KG wasn't exactly square!? Karmann Ghia was imported into US from around '55 thru '74.
Oh yes, and possibly the THING -- REALLY SQUARE! 1973 approximately.

Are you sure it's from the 60's? Are you sure it's not "The Thing"?
It might be an Eos which is new- not exactly square - but more so than a beetle. I own one - it is the only hard top convertible with a sunroof. She, whom I've named Serena, is the most wonderful car I have ever owned. 2 liter turbo engine - which takes off on you. She is pure heaven!
