We have New England, New Zealand, New South Wales, New Guinea, Newfoundland and several other countries/regions I can't remember off the top of my head. But "Nova Scotia"????

What shall we call this bit of land, Brendan, it looks a bit like Scotland. Let's give it a Latin name - then in centuries to come when they've got the internet and Yahoo! Answers...

Like others have said, it's Latin for New Scotland. You'll note that in French it's Nouvelle Ecosse, or New Scotland.

for variety, maybe.
Britain already had a bunch of colonies named "New" this or that. New York, New Jersey, Newfoundland, etc.
