To answer the why: a 5 lug conversion would give you a wide range of inexpensive aftermarket wheel options, it would give you the ability to use newer technology braking systems (the old fox body mustangs have notoriously bad brakes) and if using sn95 or newer parts should offer better steering and handling due to improved geometry As well as being the foundation for modern brake upgrades such as 11" or larger rotors and dual caliper pistons

I basically want to know all the tricks to keeping the swap as cheap as possible and avoiding pitfalls that will slow down the process. I know for a fact can be done for less than $100 using ranger parts.

Try searching on www.corral.net. They have a general mustang tech and this issue is covered extensively on there . They even have a sticky for it. It is very much worth it. Drums are so OLD.

The cheapist way is using 5 lug rotors and ranger axels and drums. Late model restoration sells a complete kit for arround 400$
The other way is using a Complete spindle set from a 94+ mustang on the front and a the Ranger axels and drums. this would be hard to estimate depending on how much you pay for your parts. Plus Latemodle Restoration also sells just the rear 5 lug kit aswell.
Then you can go all disc brakes as well this can be pieced together from junkyard and a variety of places. i have seen it done for less than 1K
The Most expensive way is the Ford motorsport Kit it cost 2000$ and will give u basicly the brakes from a Cobra. comes complete all new parts.
This site will explain all the options and parts

If you know you can do it for under $100 using Ranger parts, you know more than I do.
In order to change the rear to 5 lugs, you must find a set of axles with 5 lugs that will fit a 4 lug rearend, or easier, change the whole rearend. (That's more than $100 in my neck of the woods.)
Then you would either have to find 5 lug front hubs that would fit your spindles, or change the spindles to ones that have hubs with a 5 lug pattern.
There is nothing that can't be done if you have a lot of time and money on your hands.

I guess you are talking about the 80's Fox body, I've owned several SVO's and they all have the 5 lug system 84-86 and were the first Fox with it. If you can find one being parted out, you can score some rear disc brakes too.. or better yet, buy the whole car!

That is a big priject and it will be expensive even using junkyard parts. Why do you want to do it? Just to put some rims on it that you like? It is so not worth it. Very big hasle
