You'll find something here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bipolar_disorder

Here: http://www.nimh.nih.gov/healthinformation/bipolarmenu.cfm

And on the reference source which is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, Text Revision, also known as DSM-IV-TR is a manual published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and includes all currently recognized mental health disorders.

My daughter has Bipolar II so I've done a lot of research. There is a ton of info on the web. Try nami.org (NAMI is the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill), Bipolar.About.com, www.mentalhealth.com, www.nimh.nih.gov. This last one is the National Institute of Mental Health, a government organization.

There are also many informative books and on-line articles. An excellent book that gives general info that is easy to understand is Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Patients and Families by Francis Mark Mondimore, MD. I have even given copies of this book to relatives so they can better understand my daughter's condition.

Good Luck to you.

If you are bipolar type II, you should read thru this. It is a fairly good summary. http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/02_diagnosis.html#soft

Every bipolar person should read, "An Unquit Mind" by Kay Jamison.

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance has support groups across the US. There's a place on their site to look for one in your area. http://www.dbsalliance.org/site/PageServer?pagename=home

The NIMH site in a post above also is a good link.

A good site on meds is:
http://www.crazymeds.org

If you don't have a therapist, get one. They are very useful in a lot of ways, one of which is gaining a better understanding of the illness.

well join the club - doctors have no idea what bipolar disorder is or what causes it.
I have some theories, I think it is usually due to sleep deprivation, nutritional deficiencies and stress.

there really is not much difference between the symptoms of mania and symptoms of severe insomnia -

exercise, get regular sleep - unwind before you go bed, and you should start doing better.

doctors have everything all backwards, all confused, they have no idea what it is or what causes it. I've read several books, they dont' know.

id be more than happy to answer questions, you can also go to www.findthelight.net and create an account for support. Its free, and all the people there are great.

edit: First things are: are you BP 1 or BP 2? Are you on mood stabilizers? Do you know your triggers? Do you tend to be more manic or more depressive? Do you have a regular sleep schedule, eat healthy, exercise, and have a pretty structured/schedueled life

Go to www.bipolarhappens.com and www.juliefast.com. Read her book and follow her plan. It is excellent. There are also many meds out there that really work if you and your doctor find the right combination.
