I have a couple of interested people who would like to breed with my sweet little girl yorkie. I need to know what they expect to get out of this also the money involved with breeding. We only want to breed her just this once so we can have another little girl, I beleive the studs parents would get one of her puppies and if she has more then I would sell them for a resonable price. Thank you so much for your help!

While Lisa and Jennifer T's responses are long, they are right on target.

What sort of genetic testing will you be doing to your female? What about the male? What will you demand/expect is good? Or are you just going to stick them together and hope for the best?

What if she gets pregnant and only has one pup (only one or only one survives) you can kiss your little pup that you wanted goodbye because the owner of the male gets it and you are out the stud fee and all the bills because there are no puppies to sell. Then what - you decide to breed her just one more time. Welcome to the world of backyard breeding.

What if she needs a C-section - do you have an extra 2000.00 saved up? What about worming and vaccinating every pup that she produces? You are supposed to find buyers/homes for hte puppies before they are born. But what if they change their mind? What if the puppies don't sell? What if you are stuck with 6 puppies?

What if they do sell but a week later someone wants their money back because the pup is sickly? What then?

What happens in your family when it turns out that after breeding, whelping, and finding homes, you all are actually down (meaning have lost) money. Can your family afford that? Because that's what happens when you responsibly breed. Things happen, they come up, unexpected sickness/illnesses, emergency c-sections. .. plan on LOSING money, not making it.

If you are asking questions about breeding on YA, then you are not ready to breed your dog. The risks far outweighs the possibility of you getting a healthy pup. If you want another yorkie, try petfinder.com

They're right - Yorkie pregnancies are often difficult, and the puppies do not always all live.

Be prepared for lots of bills too.. the female dog's owners are responsible for paying for weekly then daily progesterone testing at the dr ($60 a pop, figure on 10 times total give or take) leading up to the breeding, making sure all required paperwork is in order (including registration fees and certification fees), , the insemination fees ($300 or more) or the teaser dog if the male dog doesn't feel like procreating ($200) and the bill for the C section (around $2000) because it will most likely come to that.

Add in the hospital fees, checkups for the puppies if and when they are born, first round of shots ($50 each puppy) before you can legally give them away, and youre looking at a hefty bill.

Leave it to the professionals.

If you love your Yorkie and you sound like you do. Take her to the vet and have him look her over first and make sure she meets the breed standard. Then pay the hundreds of dollars for genetic testing. Then make sure the stud you want to use does the same thing. Start putting your money aside now to deworm, start their puppy shots get a whelping box, have high quality puppy food on hand to help wean them. Hopefully you won't end up in the poor house. I am not being sarcastic just honest.

Please consider what breeding your female Yorkie female will contain. As a breeder of Yorkies,I can tell you this breed usually requires a C-section and unless you're prepared to spend about $400.00 for a vet bill, then if Mom doesn't except the pups, you have to know how to feed a newborn pup and that my dear is very difficult,as all newborn pups should be nursing on Mom for at least 3 days,or they won't have the antibioties to fight off any infection. If I was you,I would consider just purchasing another Yorkie instead of breeding the one you have.If still going to breed your pet.just be sure the male you breed with has been checked by a vet for any veneral disease,or your female will contact it if any is present.

Yorkie's do seem to have a hard time giving birth i have seen alot of the mothers as well as the babies not make it through the ordeal, especially the more petite sizes, don't ever breed your girl because someone else wants puppies or you will end up with a littler of puppies and no homes for them and you will be stuck with 3-5 head of yapping poop factories in your house that no one wants once they get here. If the interested parties really want a Yorkie there are plenty out there needing homes and i just don't think its worth putting your female or yourself through. I have had NUMEROUS people ask me to breed my shih-tzu and i just wont do it, she is MY female so who will be doing all the work and bearing all the expense?? me! then ill have a littler of sh**head..er i mean shih tzu puppies that i cant bear to part with.after the cost of extra care for mama throughout the pregnancy you have to care for the puppies, and that can be REALLY expensive, trust me unless you have some super bloodline of show dog there its not worth the money and time to breed her, just enjoy her and spoil her rotten, and if you have her spayed there's no mess every few months when she comes in heat.

Don't' breed her if you love her.

That was over 20 years ago. The information about Spay was not available. We were not well informed about spay.

My friend had a male Yorkie. We had an open to sell our house. So we asked them to dog-sit for us. Then you know what happen.

In the beginning, we thought my Yorkie was sick, then found out she was carrying. By the end, we had the puppies, found them new homes. But my Yorkie looks 10 years older. It hurt to look at her tiny face. Her hair was not as shine anymore.

Now, I have a new Yorkie, I'll spay her as soon as she is 5 months old.

Speaking as a breeder, if your main purpose is to have another one it would be cheaper to simply buy one. Less risky too.

It is quite common for Yorkies to need c-sections - usually in the middle of the night so there's an emergency fee as well.

You also need to be able to supervise the mom and pups 24/7 from a few days before whelping to at least two weeks post-partum. For many of us, this means taking time off work.

There is the expense of the pre-breeding exam and the test for brucellosis (a canine STD) http://www.wildsidekennels.com/articles/brucellosis.html
INISIST on the male having this test too, you DO NOT want your girl to get this.

Both dogs need to be checked for luxating patellas, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, and PRA. They both need a CERF examination. This is to minimize the chances of passing on hereditary diseases, which you don't want to do because a) it's just wrong and b) you puppy buyers will complain and may even sue.

Preferably you would also have had BOTH dogs evaluated either by a reputable, experienced breeder or through competition in the show ring, to prove that they have qualities worthy of passing on.

And of course, both dogs must be in excellent health, free of parasites, and of sound temperament (not shy or snappy).

Frankly, sounds to me like the stud's owners are just looking for a free puppy and having you take on all the work and expense.

You know what.. YOU have the female.. Stud dog owners do NOT approach You asking to breed.. IF you are serious about breeding, then You would be looking for a stud. NEVER EVER breed your female because someone else wants you to.

You will NOT get another girl like the one you have. Spay her.. This is a BAD idea!

Be aware that Yorkies don't always have easy uneventful pregnancies and deliveries. Often the pups are too big to pass through the birth canal.

I work at a vet hospital and we've done several emergency C-sections on Yorkies every year in the six years I've been there. We have saved all the mothers, but we've never been able to save all the puppies in each litter. Two litters were all stillborn. The cost to the owner was from $600 to about $4000...the higher costs were the cases in which all the pups were dead and it was a struggle to save the mothers, who had ruptured uteruses and infections.

I think you're setting yourselves and your dog up to possible heartbreak.

Just a general suggestion. Someone saying, "If you breed Mitzi I want a puppy" is not a serious commitment. It's amazing how fast the interest can vanish once the reality hits of a dependent little being who needs shots, wormings, etc. A $100 nonrefundable deposit is a firm commitment.
