Have you read about monkeys as pets? If you have, you would not want one. And if you knew about monkeys you would be asking where you can get a specific species, not just "a monkey". You would know the law, and you would probably not even be asking it here.

Monkeys are cute up until sexual maturity. Then it turns violent. You end up not being able to control your own pet anymore and he ends up being locked in the cage all day or sold. As he is a pet he will never be able to go to a wildlife park or zoo as he does not know anything about other monkeys.
Also, many are very high energy, and will destroy the house, apparantly they cannot be toilet trained either.

A lot of pet monkeys end up being sold or given to research labs.

The amount of monkey bites where monkeys are legal is phenominal. Even the smallest species turn vicious and cannot be controlled. I always thought it would be nice to have a monkey, but its clear that they are not pets.

For the monkeys sake and your own, please don't get one as a pet.

Good luck

Pet Monkey California

I see a lot of people answering on things they know nothing about.
First off: a monkey is very hard work. You literally are their parent.
Second: if you accept that it's hard work then you'll be fine.
They're not as bad as everyone thinks they are. I know someone who's had one and he's so damn cute. And he's grown just saying.
It all depends on what type of monkey you're looking for also. There's all kinds. The monkeys that usually stay small are capuchins, and they're adorable.
Keep doing research, and if you're very serious about getting a monkey then I say do it ! And don't listen to people being negative. Opinions are like assholes and unfortunately everyone has one xD
I do believe they're banned in California though.
Good luck. !

As others already mentioned, CA has banned the ownership of monkeys, but you can keep rescued animals if they have a small handicap in CA - you say that animal can't care for itself and cannot be released into the wild. I have heard of rescued raccoons even know they are too banned in CA.

LOL when I was younger prior to coming to the USA my father owned a monkey they sure are cute as babies and so fun to play with. But when they get older they arent so nice anymore and they OFTEN throw their poop. Is that something you'd want to deal with?

671. Importation, Transportation and Possession of Wild Animals.

(a) Species listed in subsection (c) of this Section are prohibited and it shall be unlawful to import, transport or possess these species alive except under permit issued by the Department of Fish and Game. Permits for importation, transportation or possession of these species shall be refused by the department, except that permits may be granted as specified herein and for purposes designated in Section 671.1 subject to the conditions and restrictions contained in sections 671.1, 671.2, 671.3, 671.4, 671.5, 671.6, and 671.7 and such other conditions as may be designated by the department. Cities and counties may prohibit possession or require a permit for species not requiring a state permit.

(b) In designating these prohibited species, the commission has determined that they are not normally domesticated in this state and recognizes two specific classes of prohibited wild animals. Mammals listed to prevent the depletion of wild populations and to provide for animal welfare are termed "welfare animals", and are designated by the letter "W". Those species listed because they pose a threat to native wildlife, the agriculture interests of the state or to public health or safety are termed "detrimental animals" and are designated by the letter "D". Animals may be added to or deleted from this list pursuant to the provisions of Section 2118(k) of the Fish and Game Code. The department shall include the list of welfare and detrimental wild animals as part of DFG MANUAL NO. 671 (2/25/92) IMPORTATION, TRANSPORTATION AND POSSESSION OF WILD ANIMALS, to be made available to all permittees and other interested individuals.

(c) No person shall release into the wilds of this state any animal which is not native to California except as provided in these regulations (See Section 671.6). Prohibited species include:

(2) Class Mammalia-Mammals.

(A) Order Primates-Monkeys, Apes

All species (W), except Family Hominidae not prohibited.

(B) Order Edendata-Sloths, Anteaters, Armadillos, et

monkeys are known to throw their poop at their owners, and to ejaculate and fling it at people. and as you can see from the cali law you CANNOT own a monkey unless you get a permit from the DNR
