For the same reason they make jokes about anything.. lack of respect or care. It's that simple. Ignorance might play a big part, now that I think about it.

Icons that are never examined and taboos that are never challenged become a spiritual burden to believers. "Disrespectful" familiarization is a way to humanize the superhuman and make it relevant. We do it with the type of public figure who normally never appears without a middle initial, sometimes deflating the pompous, but sometimes simply forming an identification with the idealized. Why should spiritual figures be different?
The more perfect and unnatural the BVM is made, the harder it is for people to connect with her. Her more extreme attributes have all been developed by humans to apotheose her and intimidate her admirers. Jokes can bring her back to Earth and make her real, approachable.
The idea that God, Jesus, Mary, etc. would need "protection" from irreverence is ridiculous. What is being protected is our unnatural, unquestioned impressions of them. We need to unwrap those conceptions at times to see how they were put together and see if there might be a better way to conceive them.
The concept "Mother of God" (or "Theotokos" in the Greek) is an example. Yes, she was Jesus' mother. Yes, Jesus is God. But what are the implications of saying "Mother of God"? Jesus was God before he was born, so what are we actually trying to say? What are we NOT saying? The shorthand needs to be reexamined occasionally to see if we remember correctly. But it can be a little frightening to the spiritually timid. Jokes break the tension of piety and allow us to look more closely at our beliefs. If we don't look, we don't grow. We remain spiritual infants rather than mature believers. If we can say we believe something but can't say why, we haven't been looking.
Okay, I have to contribute now. A guy was doing some renovation to an old church. As he was working on the high ceiling, he looked down from his scaffold to see an old woman come in, kneel down, and pull out her rosary. A few moments later she was into the first decade. The worker decided to play a trick and whispered, "Hey lady, this is Jesus Christ." No response. He decided she didn't hear him, so he tried again, a little louder: "Hey lady, this is Jesus Christ." She just rattled on. Finally, after a few minutes, he tried again, speaking even louder: "Hey Lady! This--"
"Shut up, Jesus Christ," she replied, "I'm talking to your mother!"

Because the culture in this country likes to make fun at anything that is different from the established norm. Virginity is despised because it is foreign to most people today and it is part of those who hold on to their anti-Catholic feelings.
I believe it is also part of the malaise in the world today of a lack of respect for people who are living and those who have gone before us who were different , did not bow to peer pressure and profess what she believed is true. Most people are afraid (at times unfortunately I am too)of reprisals or ridicule and am not myself and jokes are used as a cloak of fear of the different or jealousy of someone who was so ordinary but became spectacular because of her humble submission. We also think that submission is weakness and not strength but it is just the opposite.

I think almost any subject can be approached with reverent humour, even the Blessed Bother. I have no problem with jokes that involve her, so long as they are not vulgar, crass, or disrespectful.
I've often heard the delightful little joke about Jesus saying to the crowd, "let the one without sin cast the first stone." Then an old woman runs up out of the crowd with a small pebble, throws it quickly, giggles, and then runs off, to which Jesus replies, "Mother, sometimes you try my patience!" :-)
Mirth is part of the delightful ways God gives us to make joy in life. We should not be too superstitious about it.

because some people, like me, don't believe in religion. and people that do, don't necessarily believe that mary is blessed, or holy at all. there is also the fact that catholicism is one of the most corrupt religions on the face of the earth today. just open a history book, it isn't that hard to see why.
if you think she is holy, that's fine. to each his own. you just shouldn't expect everyone to have the same amount of respect for her that's all.

A little Catholic kid was praying as hard as he could
"God I really want a car" He prayed
He got up and looked in the driveway but there was no car
"God" He prayed "I really want a car"
But still there was no answer,so he ran downstairs and grabbed the statue of the Virgin Mary off the mantle, wrapped her up and then hid her at the bottom of his closet.
"Okay God" he said getting down on his knees again "If you ever want to see your mother again...

Because being a virgin in today's society is no longer cool. Just look at the "Singles and Dating" message board on here - you've got 11 years olds asking how to go down on a guy. What has the world come to?
Personally, me and Mary are tight.

example:
What does a baby seal order in a bar?
Canadian Club on the rocks
