*He needs to see the vet! No way to diagnose without him having been seen!
You can wash the site and rinse with hydrogen peroxide, as a stop gap measure before he sees the vet!

Well you should take him to the vet and have it looked at. Could be an allergic reaction to something, (commonly called a hot spot) These are cause be several things, feeding bad food, being allergic to something the the area, Skin problems. Right now you should clean the area and Call he vet and make an appointment to have it looked at. Next make sure you have him on a good quality food. Nothing from the grocery store would be a good quality. Natural Recipe, Natural Balance, Wellness, Candie, Pinnacle all these are great foods. Good luck and hope this helps!!!

You have to take him to the vet. I have kind of bad news, though. The vet will recommend 'docking' his tail. that means trimming it down (surgically removing most of it) to be just like dobermans short little tails.
You will think this awful, maybe. But I've been through this experience. It is so much more horrible not to dock the tail - the surgery is painless to the dog because he or she is anesthetized. The dog gets a cone on her neck to keep her from getting at the tail while it heals. It's pretty simple and the the dog would thank you for it if she could!
I fought this whole docking surgery like crazy and argued with the vet about it. I was determined to let my dog keep her tail when she developed a sore on it. I went to great lengths to keep the wound clean and put antibiotic on it and change the bandages all the time. It is an absolutely horrible grueling experience and the bottom line is that it does not work.
You can't make the dog sit still while her tail wound heals. You have to keep it clean and bandaged and what happens is that the dog accidently brushes up against something or just wags her tail and the wound eventually gets impacted by the activity. This is a 24-hour job and it still can't be done!
The dog constantly tries to lick her wound even if it is bandaged.
The vet listened patiently to me while I struggled through all of this and finally his advice sank in - even if the wound did eventually heal (not likely!), the spot would remain sensitive. The dog will never stop wagging her tail just because she might hit something with it. The wound will happen again, most likely in exactly the same spot.
So very reluctantly, thinking I was being cruel, I submitted my dog to having the surgery and having her tail docked. It was the ideal solution and we never worried about wounds on her tail again. And she didn't miss her tail at all!

You need to get him in before it gets infected and really causes problems. If money is a problem, check out your local animal shelters or Humane Societies...they sometimes have clinics at reduced rates. No matter what though, the dog needs to be seen by a vet.

Don't listen to kathy w. Your dog probably has an allergy to fleas, or grass, or just might be an irritation. Take it to the vet as he probably needs medication and a cone for his head as it is still bleeding because he is scratching or biting it. :)

I stongly suggest that you take him/her to the vet as soon as you can as it may be serious. However, to stop infection apply BETADINE to the area and do not let the dog lick, bite or chew at the sore. I hope all goes well.
