It is hard. We all slip and fall, being flesh. Flesh is weak. That does not mean that we are not Christians. Some are young in Christ, and speak out of ignorance, for they have not yet studied and grown in the knowledge of God. And yes, some are simply hypocrites, and other things that are cloaked as Christians. God is the only one that can reveal some of these. He will not tolerate a person that hides behind His name in order to commit atrocious acts without being suspected. So it was recently with the man that propositioned the police officer in the bathroom for sex. Or even people like Jimmy Swaggart, who was one of the first to speak ill of Jim Bakker publicly, when he himself was doing the same thing. God will not be used in that manner. The light of truth will always expose that which is in darkness.
Good day, sir. May the truth find you before the end does.

Christians may be found in various stages of ultimate perfection in Christ.
Some are still weak and sinful ... some are less so.
Those who appreciate the primacy of love over judgment get the most points.
But every Christian is empowered and even required to judge all things, except the eternal destiny of a soul.
That alone is reserved exclusively for Jesus.

As an athiest, you wouldn't be able to differentiate. Not until you are born again yourself.
A true Christian is born again of the Spirit. Whole; body, soul & spirit. You are a body, soul & dead/blind spirit, so you can't see spiritually or understand spiritually to spiritually discern a spiritual Christian who is redeemed by His blood.
Except by their testimony. As an unbeliever, you would probably cut off the true Christian when he would give you a word about Christ or his testimony.
Faith comes by hearing & hearing a word about Christ/ God.

It doesn't matter to me whether your beliefs make you a "true" Christian or not. But I have noticed that some of them pay no attention to the teachings where he instructed his followers to heal the sick, give to the needy, visit people in prison, etc. He recommended kindness and compassion, even to people you think you should hate.

Fortunately (or unfortunately - depending on the way you look at it!) Anyone can pretend and be a "faux" anything.
I guess we have to realize that Christians are people too.

You're a Pastor and an atheist? I would say you could tell the true Christians by their love for others & God as well as their actions.

The word Christian means a footstep follower of Christ. What did Jesus do on earth and what He preached should identify a true follower of Christ or true Christian. Anything else is not Christian.................Did Jesus lie, steel, or not show love? Did Jesus call His friends insulting names? So if we do things that Jesus did not do, can we call ourselves a Christian or follower of Christ?
Atheist are not blind, they can see who really are Christians.

We can take a page out of their book. We tie them up and throw them in a lake, if they drown they are obviously true christians, if they live they are false and we burn them at the stake.
