I agree with you.
...and don't get me started on the postage pricing by size.. I mean why does it cost twice as much to post an envelope an inch wider than a normal A4 sized envelope of the same weight?
...and if a first class stamp is 32p or whatever, why can't they scale up the prices by that amount? Why have postage cost of 65p? What's with the penny? Just to catch people out so that they can have someone write postcards to the receipients to ask for £1.20 for that 1p of insufficient postage?

You are correct. They mail will travel together and most likely be delivered on the same day. But there will be a situation where second class mail takes a back seat to higher priority mail. And that situation is when the mail must travel by air. The USPS is the largest commercial customer of the U.S. airlines.
During periods of heavy mail delivery, there may be weight AND space limitations on the amount of mail an airplane can carry. When this is the case, the lower priority mail stays on the ground while the higher priority mail gets on the plane. The lower priority mail may just layover on the ground anywhere from 1 to 3 days and, in extreme situations, possibly longer.

LOL! I know, sometimes they might not even deliver it at all. My mum sent my sister a letter and put a crumb from a cake she'd just made in it and when my sister got it the corner of the envelope had been ripped off and the crumb was gone!!
You just have to shove a stamp on it and cross your fingers these days.

I think one is cheaper. Maybe First Class go by Truck on Freeway and Second Class go by Bus on the back roads.

You have seen it is yet another rip off. In fairness first cclas usually gets there the next day probably to late to do anything about it and 2nd cleaa takes longer because it is deliberately delayed

The difference is money, the second class package will get second class handling, while the first class package gets first class handling, the old saying goes"You get what you pay for" comes to mind......
