Here's the rub, for the first time ever, last week the screen went black for about 20 minutes. The sound remained and once the picture came back they haven't had any problems. Is this an indication that the TV is going out? Currently we have an analog old TV with cracked speakers, so we are tempted if it is fixable and not too expensive.

Projection TVs require you change the light source/bulb every 2 years or so. That is about $300+ in itself.
Make sure it has a digital Tuner (if you use an Antenna)
and at least a DVI input.

Maybe. How much would a 60" TV cost today, even the cheapest no-frills one? Probably anywhere from $1500 - $2500, so $500 sounds pretty good. 6 years old, going on 7, well, rear projection TV's are still CRT TV's and CRT's last pretty good, a lot more than 7 years. You'll probably get anywhere from 5 - 10 more years out of it. And lastly, Sony is well engineered.

Now for the scare. It went dark for 20 minutes. That would give me concern. But then it cleared up. Usually when something goes bad in electronics, it stays bad. This one didn't, so it sounds like a fluke. More importantly, it didn't go to just magenta or yellow, meaning one of the crt's was about to go bad. THOSE are expensive.

No, at worst, if it does screw up down the road, it will be a relatively simply circuit repair. The bad news is, TV repairs on RP sets can run about $300. Still, once fixed, it's not like they're lemons constantly breaking down.

For $500, I'd buy it. Even if I did have to repair it a couple years from now, I figure it would be worth it. But remember that HD is becoming more popular and you might wish that you'd bought one of those.

(Me, I've never been impressed with HD, just so that you'll know my bias.)

Your better off spending more and getting something new. A 6 year old t.v is not worth it in my opinion. Plus 61" is a masssive thing to move, especially when it craps out on you and you feel like a tool for buying it. Just my opinion though. I would check our www.consumerreports.org for more info.

It's 6 years old and about due for some major work. I wouldn't even consider it!

Sounds risky.
Has the color ever been restored?
That alone can run $500.00 up.
