Many people do use the dogs "as personal ATM machines." However, there are several who don't.
Any reputable breeder, and there are a few on this board, doesn't make a profit off breeding.
The BYB's will always breed. They think that they are owed something for the money they spent on their dogs. I know one who claims that she is making designer hybrids affordable for everyone....that is why she charges $400 for these mutts.

While your first two responders believe that the only incentive to allow dogs & cats to breed indiscriminately is financial gain, this is actually not the only reason.
I have met people who don't want to spend the money involved in neutering. But they don't think about preventing conception by watching when the female goes into heat and separating her.
I have met people who believe dogs should have the same rights to choose when to have babies as humans have. They think dogs have sex for fun, and they don't realize that an average dog, going into heat twice a year with an average lifespan of 12 years, having anywhere from 4 though 12 pups, can produce an average of anywhere from 100 through 250 pups in a lifetime. Humans don't do that.
Some people decide they just HAVE to breed their b**** at least ONCE because she's "so good tempered" or "so pretty" They don't think of any of the repercussions.
Some people just "don't think" ... they are oblivious to their dogs... to their own responsibilities... to what will happen to all those hundreds of pups born due to irresponsible actions on their part.

I completely agree with you! I got into a big argument w/ my cousin because he wants to breed his female pitt bull. He's claiming it's because she's such a great dog, and he wants something of her to live on, which is sweet... but definitely not practical or beneficial to the breed considering there are so many pitt bull puppies out there just waiting to be adopted- mainly due to the bad rap the breed gets because of attacks by pitts that have not been raised right. Now it's almost impossible to get an apartment if you have a pitt, and I think a lot of animal insurers won't cover them, either.
Ugh, and don't even get me started on puppy mills... GRR!
Hopefully this weekend I'll be adopting a 9 month old rescued dobie mix. A month ago she was pretty much seconds away from being put into the gas chamber at a high kill shelter in GA. The place was so overcrowded that they were euthanizing animals 3 times a week... just another example of what can happen to innocent animals that are put into a horrible situation brought about by human irresponsibility.

I couldn't agree with you more. You know considering the growing epidemic of homeless animals maybe there should be some legislation that makes people have a license and a suitable facility in order to legally sell animals. If it cost to do this it might at least slow some of the back yard breeders down.
I have 17 indoor cats that are all strays or the kittens of strays that someone tossed out. We need everyone to take a break from breeding cats and dogs for a while at least.
To CareBear - do you have any idea how long it would take for cats and dogs to go extinct with the amount of them that are in the country today? They are killing animals by the thousands per month. And the dogs that end up in shelters are not limited to mutts, you can find many pure breeds there too.

They want the profit, so of course, most are entirely unethical in what they do as a result. Some think their dog is "perfectly cute" and they want to breed to keep a pup from their dog.
They don't care that they are the reason shelters are flooding with animals and many get put down due to lack of homes.
If people breeding, byb specifically, actually cared about the pups they produced, they would be doing checks on interested parties and make sure the pups would have a forever home. Sadly, they sell them and are done with it.

Ya it's true... many people are just breeding their animals to make a quick buck. Those people are alos known as "Backyard Breeders". There is a difference between them and people who breed sensibly. Everyone loves their pet right? Your dog, your cat... they all had to come from some breeder! Breeding is ok if your are doing it in a way that is not harmful to your pet. I realize that there are thousands of animals put in shelters and euthenized every year. But these are products of neglegent breeders. People who want "the quick buck" by making their animals pop out as many babies as possible: Mixed breeds and mutt puppies that are cute and cheap. That is why then end up on the street... They have no value to the owner. A sensible breeder breeds only once a year or so, and has ALL of their regulations straight. Vet checks, shots, etc. They only sell to families or people that are loving and show respect and loyalty to their pets. It is a hard process and that is why people take the easy breeding way out. I don't want to be a push over or anything, but i just feel that people should quite telling EVERYONE to spay and nueter their pets. If they did... all the puppies and kitties would go extinct! I believe only reliable poeple should breed their pets, and not for the money, but for the joy of seeing new creation and finding them a happy healthy home! I've posted a website about backyard breeding with this as well...

Who breeds cats? Thats so weird and stupid. .You cant even really sell them (if the reason these "pet owners" breed is for money-which I'm sure it is). .
My aunt has 10 dogs--all random mixed breed strays that over the years have found a way to her or to someone she knows. And in their (my aunt & uncles) equipment yard-she feeds daily 30+ WILD stray cats. All the ones she can she has had spayed/neutered as well as ALL of her dogs. & she offers to pay for other people's stray animals to be spayed/neutered.
She's a very kind person. but to think- what she's doing is only counter-acting a very small bit of the many pet owners out there who don't take responsibility for their pets.

I would suggest a dog, and for the breed I would say a shih tzu. They are relatively small, they are hypo-allergenic/have hair so they do not shed and they are more of a "lazy" type of dog if you were to give it a title. Some what like a cat, small, fluffy, not much of an active dog and you could cuddle with it. Also gender wise wouldn't matter as much, especially if you intend on neutering it. (which I would recommend).

You know, I ask myself this every time I see a family in the parking lot @ Wall-Mart w/ a sign on the windshield advertising "Pitt Bull Puppies" or "Golden Lab Puppies". I want to stop, smack the 'adults' & take all the pups w/ me. It's irresponsible of people to breed their dogs. One of the first steps that needs to be taken when you get a dog/cat is to fix it. Period. Even people who breed pure dogs should be limited. This is just my opionion!!!
Like everyone else ... there are TONS of dogs/cats who need loving homes. I think too, people like the idea of a 'puppy' or 'kitten' as opposed to an older dog.

They do it because it is profitable to them. As long as there are people out there that want specific breeds then there will be people who will make it happen for them. You could turn the question around and ask why if there are so many children out there that need good homes and live in foster care or group homes, etc.. do people keep having babies?
