Jesus speaks about the harvest being the end of this system of things, this world. That means that Armageddon is the harvest.
The angels go out and separate the goats and sheep -- the goats go into everlasting cutting off while the sheep survive into Paradise. These survivors, Revelation call the Great Crowd.
The reason no man can number it is because its number is not fixed. Thus depending upon how many people are judged sheep is what controls their number.

The great multitude is of the Great Tribulation. They are under the Throne with the 144 thousand. The Great Tribulation took place from 1680 AD to 1960 AD. These include those who died in American war for Independence, The American Revolutionary war, WW1 and WWII in which 6 million Jews died and every other war between these to dates.
The Tribulation took place between 0 AD and 280 AD.

Just a little later in chapter 7 the apostle John answers this very question, "13 Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, “These who are clothed in the white robes, who are they, and where have they come from?” 14 I said to him, “My lord, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." (Revelation 7:13-14) In other words, this great crowd is made up of the saints that will be saved during the Great Tribulation. It is true that this will be a time of great judgment, but it will also be a time of great redemption (cf. v. 14; 6:9–11; 20:4; Is 11:10; Mt 24:14).

If one takes into account the whole of Revelation 7, one notes a group that can be numbered ...the 144,000.
They are chosen from the earth for life in the heavenly realm.
The purpose?
To work with Jesus in his kingdom (Revelation 14)
The other group, the Great Crowd, are those who will live on earth once God has changed it into a paradise, as it was suppose to be from the start.
Jesus and the 144,000 will reign over the earth, or govern.
If no one is on earth ....what's the point.
The Great Crowd are those alluded to in Psalm 37:29.
They are also referred to "kinda" in John 10:16 as 'other sheep'.
One hope = everlasting life.
2 destinies = 144,000 in heaven + Great Crowd on earth.

this typical quote from a very far out and Gnostic sounding 'gospel' is just another bit of a very confusing bit of writing that only gets more and more delusional towards the end, complete with a 1500 mile square city or "Borg" that transcends earth and heaven while the earth continues to rotate. Imagine being in this building that looks like a giant pimple on the earth? man it would suck to be a superintendent for that super structure

14:6 And I saw an angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
The “everlasting gospel” is simply a guideline of how we should treat each other so that we all have the same opportunity to experience joy and happiness, which is the reason why we exist. As he has all throughout his Revelation, John uses the term “angel” here to represent those who have been given power and authority over what goes on here upon the earth. As previously mentioned, these angels are exalted beings far more advanced than any mortal. They come from other solar systems, some from other galaxies, to oversee the planets of this solar system, assuring that all things follow their outlined course of providing happiness for those who are assigned here.
In these latter times, they have allowed the knowledge (“fire”) to come down from heaven, figuratively, to make it possible that “every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people” has the opportunity to learn of each other, and to learn the things that are necessary to promote peace and equality—the forerunners of joy and happiness.
As these latter times progress, the world will become more closely connected unlike any other time in its short human history. Through the means of communication being introduced, the day will come when every living soul will have access to knowledge; not necessarily the truth, but vast amounts of information. As we begin to experience the effects of this knowledge, we are able to discern the difference between what brings lasting happiness, and what causes our stresses and unhappiness.
All of our experience, understanding, wisdom, and knowledge that we gain in mortality, will lead us to one ubiquitous conclusion: Doing unto others what we would have them do unto us in all situations is the only way to lasting happiness—this is the “everlasting gospel” of which John speaks.
This comes from the book that explains every single symbol and riddle in Revelation in plainness. If you want to understand it all, I suggest reading the book from cover to cover. It changed my life.

They are the faithful servants who survived the great tribulation. Some say this takes place in Heaven, but this actually takes place here on Earth.
Revelation 7:9
9After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.
Before the Throne?
Jesus said his people will be before him when he arrives in his glory.
Matthew 25:31
31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory.
32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
As you can see, it says all the nations will be gathered before him once he arrives in his glory.
In Revelation 7:9, it uses the term before.
ἐνώπιον (enōpion) - " in the sight of", "in the presence of "
http://cf.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G1799&Version=kjv
So its clear that they are in the sight of Jesus here on earth.
So this events takes place here on earth once he "separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats."
---These people are united in a organized religion, because they are all crying the same message unitedly "Salvation we owe to our God, who is seated on the throne and to the Lamb" - Revelation 7:9

it said the "great crowd" because it did not want to give a specific number. An unespecified number of people would be saved. Just because you belong to a church does not automatically mean that you are going to be saved.
