Its not a competitive run, but I want to run and not walk. I don't want to be gasping for air. I work out regularly....I use the elliptical for about 30 mins and do a weight routine about 3x a week.

Suggestions appreciated!

I hate to say this, but you should have started training a bit earlier.
Working out on the elliptical is a completely different animal from running.
Having said that, you need to get out there an start actually running. I'm guessing you'll be outside, so you'll want to practice some hills and maybe some off-road (grass) running.
Get out there and just go for it - run until you get tired....but don't stop. Just slow down and jog lightly. Then after you get tired of doing that, stop and walk. Recover (let your heart rate come back down) and then start running again until you've covered your desired distance.
You'll probably have to run at least 4x per week over the next two weeks to get your body accustomed to the pounding on your joints.
Good luck!

Eeeek, that's short notice. Well, at least you already work out on a regular basis. Maybe increase your elliptical time, and/or the number of days you work out. Do you have a gauge that shows you how far you "travel" on your elliptical device? Maybe try to do the whole 5K each time you get on it - that will surely prepare you for the real thing.

When you actually do the real 5K, pace yourself from the very start.

Good luck, and be proud of yourself!

Go out as soon as possible and jog ... slowly, for about 8k (that's 5 miles). Even if you have to walk for some or most of it, that's okay.

Take the next day off.

Then jog about 1-2 miles at a steady pace every day -- or every other day -- until 3 days before your race. Take the last two days off completely ... try not to walk more than you have to.

Go to bed early. Eat lots of pasta and carbs the day before your race. Have a nice drink of water 1 hour before your race.

And have fun!!
