Actually, all ecstatic religions have their root in African and/or Kardecian spiritualism. The spiritist movement started by Alan Kardec, et. al. encouraged even non-African Diaspora to experience spirit on a more visceral level than traditional Christianity did. The workings of Alan Kardec, as I understand it, came from African-based spiritual knowledge as it had traveled through Egypt and Mesopotamia. Kardec brought to the forefront tarot cards reading, seances, and other attempts to contact the spirit world.
Ecstatic Christian traditions include Baptists (although this is largely a phenomenon in traditionally African-American baptist churches more so than their white counterparts), African Methodist Episcopal, Pentecostal (which can be quite racially mixed groups), and Spiritualist (common in New Orleans but originated in the mid-West if I recall correctly).
Some of these traditions are more clearly related to the African Traditional Religions (ATRs) in origin and practice than others. For example, in Spiritualist churches in New Orleans it is quite common to see some of the same saint images that are used in the ATRs used throughout the church. Also, they have a tradition of prophesy and spiritual reading much as in the ATRs. The Baptist tradition, as I understand it, does not consider readings to be a valid form of communication with God or his emissaries and, like most Protestant traditions does not use saint images.
Hope this helps,
Mambo Michele

It's not just baptists, but pentecostals as well.
To answer your question, there is a link. Black Southern Baptist Churches have several practices that can be traced back to African Religion. Maybe not Voodoo per se (which is from Haiti), but African none-the-less. The problem is that people today inherited as part of their Christian tradition these practices and weren't told which ones have an African root.
It could be found in the wording of some of the Hymns, burial customs and so forth. The Brer Rabbit and Uncle Remus stories told by Southern African Americans who are traditionally baptists have been proven to be Congolese in origin but adapted to the U.S.

the two faiths finally have confidence interior the comparable issues. they're the two Christian. the two faiths renowned salvation with the aid of Christ's crucifixion, the two faiths have confidence in an all-powerful god. Now the two disagree on the greater superficial factors of religion. maximum heavily, baptists take the Bible because of the fact the literal and unquestionable be attentive to God. They study it therefor, that's authentic. Catholics study the Bible as especially a metaphor, something that needs to be interpreted. to no longer numerous from fixing a riddle. This distinction in interpretation finally ends up in lots of diffused alterations. Transubstantiation, via St. Thomas Aquinas' reason, is a mix of theological interpretation and Aristotelian good judgment. Baptists reject transubstantiation, because of the fact it is no longer, be conscious for be conscious, interior the Bible. this concept is a form between the two faiths and on their disagreements. additionally worth of no longer, as nicely he countless extremely diffused alterations, their is a brilliant distinction between non secular tone amoung the two faiths. As i'm optimistic you may tell purely from the responces, Catholics look much less confrontational, on a similar time as the Baptists look greater agressive. This stands to reason that a faith it is predicated of absolutes would be a splash greater fanatical and much less accepting of alterations. on a similar time as maximum of Catholicism particularly recognizes the smaller Protesant denominations. in fact, maximum Europeans have on no account heard of a renowned Baptist. So thats truly the conflict in a simplistic nut shell. i might additionally decide for to be conscious that the Catholic Church has a very useful relationship with Anglicans, Lutherans, and the jap Orthodox faiths. exciting to be conscious, none of those faiths take the Bible actually eather. those varieties of faiths have their disagreements, besides the fact that that's many times greater theological and much less fanatical, interior the renowned era besides. As a Catholic, I ought to assert that no faith is thoroughly precise or thoroughly incorrect. and that i think of that's immportant and morally precise to appreciate the Baptist faith, seem at their ideals and honor its finer factors on a similar time as rejecting is worse traits. i actually wish all faiths ought to respectfully disagree, yet they cant.

No, I don't think so.
That sort of "being seized by the/a spirit" is common to many many faiths (especially primitive ones). Not a direct link, just a common human experience, imo.
