Lava rocks are best for this. River rocks cannot withstand the heat and ca crack, even explode!

J*Mo is correct. River stones can contain small amounts of water and explode as steam bombs when heated. If you plan to use river stones, test them in an outside fire first- while keeping a safe distance! If they fail to explode, they are probably safe to use in your gas fireplace. Otherwise, lava rocks are a much safer idea.

I am thinking river rocks are just plain rocks found in a river bed. I would dry them out and test them like the others said, but I am sure any rocks can withstand high heat.

I would not use any natural stones. Too much chance of air inside which could explode when heated. Break one open and you can see the air pockets.
