I went to a recruiters office yesterday for the first time and did not tell him about my marijuana use about a week ago. I am enlising in the reserves and still have to take my physical and asvab very soon. If my drug test comes up positive for marijuana, am i finished? or is there a possibility of a waiver? I fully realize that it was a terrible decision and one of which i will never do again.
Thank you all in advance.

tell your recruiter about smoking. He will be a little pissed at first because you lied, but it is better then popping and then find out. When I recruited one kid told me he never tried it. He popped and I got in trouble. So I told him to get lost. He had no integrity, I didn't want him.
Trust me, a waiver is easy to get and it is no big deal, so long as you don't lie. About every 3 kids I put in had a waiver for pot.

Typically, being up front about this sort of thing is always the best policy. This applies when you have to try to get a US security clearance too. If you tell the truth, then your answers will always be the same in the future. If you lie, you will probably forget the details of the lie and slip up. They want to gauge your level of responsibility and also your ability to be exploited (by the enemy). If you are scarred of some detail in your life, then somebody can always use that to blackmail you into doing whatever they want you do do. On the other hand, if you are open and honest and bold, you have nothing to fear.

It depends on how much mary jane you have been smoking. If this really was just a one-time-use thing, chances are it will not show up on a urinalysis. Pot is stored in the fat cells. The more you smoke, the more likely there are stored traces of it in your system. Typically, it takes around six weeks for it to clear your system entirely. You will want to drink lots of water before your urinalysis. Be sure to give them a sample that is clear. Also, they typically may only randomly screen the samples. You could get lucky, and your sample is not even tested. Since they test regularly once you are in, they figure they'll get you eventually (if you continue to use).

I commend you for wanting to join the Marines. In my opinion it is the most impressive branch of the military. I was a Navy guy myself, and we dealt with Marines a lot (including sharing parts of our boot camp with them).

Also, other branches are probably willing to take you, but you really have to be up front about drug use. Yes, there are waivers available, but you can't let them catch you in a lie.

you are definitely not finished.
i was in the marine corps and Most of the guys I knew smoked weed before they joined. I am almost positive they still drug test when you go to the MEPS. To tell you the truth, you can probably talk to your recruiter about it because he needs your enlistment to hit his quota, and would rather help you pass or delay the process for a few weeks than lose you because you popped positive for THC. A lot of guys I knew bought over the counter stuff to take they made them pass drug tests - it is worth looking into. By the way, I worked for the SACO and was a legal clerk. The Corps has a zero tolerance for drugs and will administratively separate you with an other than honorable discharge if you do drugs on active duty. One piece of advice - when you get to Parris Island (or San Diego), they will try to interrogate all of the recruits and force secrets out of them (like prior drug use). It is all B.S. Don't get nervous and tell them every bad thing you ever did. They have no way of investigating your background (like they say they do). Don't sweat it - its all indoctrination.

You can get a waiver for MJ use in the past. But if it shows up in your urine or blood work, you are screwed as that is considered current use.

Best bet, delay the exam for a month. Do not smoke pot, stay away from those who do, do not even eat a poppy seed bagel!

As long as you let some one know you smoked pot, you'll be okay. If you're honest and pop positive at MEPS they'll just make you wait (45 days, I think) and you can come back and try again.
If you really want to join be honest about everything, especially with the people at MEPS. If your recruiter tells you that something is no big deal and to not bother telling them....tell them anyways. Let the MEPS decide whether isn't no big deal or not; they don't have quotas to meet.

Tell your recruiter that you need some time before you go to MEPS, go to the grocery store and get some cranberry juice, then go to a vitamin/nutritious store (like GNC0 and get some niacin. Go home and take like 4 niacin every 4 hours while drinking a lot of cranberry juice and water, you could even drink vinegar( you'll prefer the cranberry juice). do that and it will keep you going to the the bathroom, that's good because you'll be clearing out your system by pissing. Depending on how much you smoked, the more you're going to have to do it though. Good Luck!!!

Waiver???????? You used a waiver in your judgment. Of course, you now realize that.
Possibly by then it will have washed out. meanwhile, don't touch the stuff again. If they ask, 'did you use drugs" you;'d have to answer , do explain you did-once- and realize it was a mistake.
i hope all works out well for you.

Nice of C. Hall to tell you how to beat the system. I wouldn't want him or you watching my back.
TELL the recruiter before he finds out for himself. I don't know what will happen. Sometimes you have to face the consequences for your actions. You were committing a crime in most states. The times of joining the Marine Corps instead of going to jail are in the past. They are more selective now.

I would be very honest with your recruiter about what you did. I know of many Marines that smoked weed before they enlisted and their recruiters helped them get clean so that they could join.

Good luck!
