First off I prefer the "Bolt action" and second the 270 is an awesome Deer sized game round, it's flat shooting like the 7mm. The 270's factory load is very close in specs to to -06, 270: fps 3480 & 2612ME w/100gr. SP., 3069 & 2702 w/120gr. SP., 2850 & 2705 w/150gr. SP.
30-06: 125rg. SP. 3140fps & 2736ME., 150gr. SP, 2920fps & 2839ME., 165gr. SP., 2800fps & 2873ME.
All listed here are 3 factory lods for each round. The 7mm is more the these two and the recoil is a little more. The 270 is also a top pick for many Elk Hunters and Guides alike.

VERY IMPORTANT: The .270 Winchester is NOT a .7mm diameter bullet. The .270 Win. is a .27 caliber bullet. The .7mm bullet is a .28 caliber bullet. I know of a hunter who accidently mixed up his bullets and hand-loaded his .270 casings with .7mm bullets. Guess what? He killed the deer but his .270 rifle barrel bursted. Ruined a perfectly good .270 rifle.
The .270 Winchester is just about ideal for up to Mule deer. It will even take Elk and Moose but this is where your .30-06 will have an advantage, on the heavier, bigger boned game.
I personally prefer a bolt action for hunting.
Best.

RoadHaz: You are rounding .277 up to .28 which in a high pressure cartridge will burst your rifle barrel if you accidently mix the .270 up with a real .28 caliber bullet. That is why the manufacturer rounds it down to .27 rather then .28 caliber. The size is too close to determine without measuring them. Don't confuse the novice hunter/reloader by saying they are both .7mms. Too many inexperienced people will reason: "Well, since the .270 & .7mm are the same, I'll just load the 175 grain .7mm bullet in my .270 cause the heaviest .270s I can find are only 150 grains!" You are right that in a low pressure, slow moving lead bullet the .003 difference is nil. Not so in a high pressure copper/lead rifle bullet.
Thanks,
H

RE:
Is a .270 caliber rifle a good Deer Hunting gun?
Compared to a 30/06 or 7mm caliber rifle, also do you prefer a bolt action or semi-auto action gun?

The .270 is actually a 7mm diameter bullet and yes it's great for deer and game up to the size of elk in the hands of a careful hunter. Personally I'm partial to bolt actions but I would feel quite comfortable hunting with a semi-auto as well.
Very important for H. Yes the .270 Bullet .277 is a true 7mm bullet do the math. Note I did not say that you could fire any of the 7mm cartridges in the .270
0.277 inch = 7.035 8 millimeter (270 Winchester bullet dia)
0.284 inch = 7.213 6 millimeter (7mm bullet diameter)

270 is great for deer, i use a 25/06 rem. pretty close to the same round, both were derived from a 30/06 casing. 30/06 prob has more range of bullets that can be shot from them but feel the accuracy ot the 270 and 25 are better since they shoot "flatter" i always choose bolt for all my hunting rifles..
for the other answer who said dont hunt and look at these pics before you do....... i know that you prob an anti hunter but im my area a pic like that warrants good job.. got a nice pic of me with a huge 8 point and one with my 7 year old daughter and her first buck if you would like to give us a little more publicity. ive hunted deer for 20 years now so i have lots of nice pics i could share

The 30/06 is the preffered gun by most I hunt with a 270 and have never had a problem killing deer. I have shot 2 deer that were over 300 yards away and dropped them with any gun you just need to make a good shot regardless of gun power.

And another YES from me. The .270 and 30-06 are still the top sellers every deer season. It has a flat trajectory, good long range punch, and recoil is tolerable by all, but the most inexperienced shooters. I know many people who swear by it every deer season, and have absolutely no problems with it. Compared to the 30-06, it is faster with the lighter bullets, and only slightly weaker in terms of energy. Also, the 30-06 will generate more recoil. Compared to the 7mm Mag., the 7mm launches it's lead faster, has more energy, and more recoil also. I use a 30-06 and 7mm every deer season, and they are also very good rounds.
