Okay, I wasnt going to post but I have to. Marines are not some "elite, first in last out force" that you would believe they are, They dont have the size or support elements to do that in a large battlefield! 1st boots on the ground in Iraq AND Afghanistan- U.S. Army! The reason the Marines have the First in Last out motto, is from the island hopping campaigns in WWII--- which they were PERFECT for because of their specialization in amphibious assault. Another little known fact- they were going to be disbanded at one point until they focused on amphibious assault ops and that became their calling- and thank God they did because WWII Pacific theatre would have been SOOO much longer if they hadnt.

I have served with Marines, and they are highly motivated- not unlike Soldiers in the Army. The differences in the Marines and the Army have already been covered, but so many have added misconceptions about the Marines. The marines are no harder than some of the things the Army offers. People think that the MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) is some super elite force--- Its the Marine version of an Airborne unit. Marine Recon is the same/similiar to Army Rangers ( By the way, ask any marine who has airborne wings where he went for jumpschool- The only place to go is the U.S. Army Airborne school as Ft. Benning- The Basic Airborne Course being the first step into the spec ops field). Difference is they specialize (marines) in amphibious assault. The Marines are a scalpel that cuts away at the enemy. The Army is a broad sword that slashed and bludgeons are way though the toughest armies. We both work together to accomplish a mutual goal of defeating the enemy and protecting the U.S. Although alot of marines I have met think the only thing to do in war is kill kill kill, we in the Army are also taught that there is intelligence to be gathered- you cant always have a enemy that is clearly identified and easy to shoot, as evidenced in Iraq/Afghanistan..........And one more thing, overall, I have met just as many "dirtbags" in the Marines as I have in the Army. Its up to the individual.

Truthfully there is very little except for each service own internal culture. The marines are a sub dept that belongs to and receives it funding through the Navy. They receive very little funding a there is less of a need for marines and that is the real reason there are so few of them. But they have a great P.R. dept and advertise this deficiency as the few and the proud. Also they marine like to say that they are the first to fight which historically is not true. Afghanistan the first ones in where Army SF, 10th mountain, and rangers. Iraq while the marines are there and they did do great things they fall under the Army's highest leadership because they are an attachment. Roughly the U.S. Army is in charge and fighting 3/4 of real world missions.

Soldiers are in the Army and Marines are Marines. Basically to my knowledge, Marines are the ruthless, most kick-*** service out of the services, but they're the ones that's really on the front line so that's why most of them die (no offense Marines but it's the truth). Army soldiers are like the Marines, they come in after the Marines have done the dirty work and that's why they die the 2nd most (no offense to those in the Army but it's the truth). The Air Force and the Navy are about the same when it comes to being safe, but both of those branches have jobs where Sailors and Airmen can be sent to a hot zone.God Bless ALL our branches, Especially the Marines and Army.

The main difference between BRANCH is the uniform, basic training amoun of weeks, and the fact that Marines are first and last to leave. Marines are the most hardcore of the military branches, they take brotherhood seriously (not so say that evryone else doesn't). It is the toughest, roughest, and last but not least, elite. Marines are soldiers, but once a Marine ALWAYS a Marine

The Marines are first on land clearing the way for the Army and the Air Force.

Marines are from the United States Marine Corp.

Soldiers are from the United States Army.

Sailors are from the United States Navy.

There are 4 different areas of our military. The Army calls their guys soldiers. The Marines call their guys Marines. The Navy calls their guys sailers and the Air Force typically has the pilots.

Not bad Sgt Martin BUT..... here is the key ingredient missing from your Theseus....Marines are a offensive organization. We are taught to kill and break things period.
There is nothing nice about what Marines do.....But Marines do what they do because they are the best at what they do.
This is all they do.(Thank God) As for the Marines being dissolved into the other branches of service.....It was all talk then as it is now. This country needs its professional "PIPE HITTERS".
