Levi, a 5 year old Bernese, lost 12.5 pounds in 5 months and now has high liver count. He has loose stools but otherwise, acts normal and happy. The vet wants to run more tests. Any ideas?

Liver damage is serious business, and can be caused by many things. Because your dog is only 5, I would encourage you to authorize more diagnostics, including ultrasound and even biopsy. Cancers caught early in the liver are often surgically treatable, as well as chronic pancreatitis, diabetes, and continued exposure to toxins, which are all common causes of liver disease.

Definately go to the vet! Don't want to alarm you but we lost our male 3 year old Standard Poodle to Leukemia in February. He had a very high liver count and lost a lot of weight.

Let your vet run those tests. A critter that loses that much weight without an explanation has a problem. Make sure to ask lots of questions about what your vet finds, until you understand what's going on.

Good luck!

Don't listen to us, this is something that you cannot 'fix' at home, but need the Vet to get to the root of the problem. It could be serious and then, maybe it will turn out to be nothing too major that a change in diet will fix.

Sending lots of good luck thoughts to you and your dog that it is solved quickly.

Could be alot of things, some of them quite serious- I would have the vet continue with the tests. Most vets will try to work with you- and not order 1000 tests at once, start with what they think is most likely, then continue as needed. Hope everything works out ok.

Definately let the vet run the tests. I know it's expensive but it is the only hope that you have for getting to the root of the problem.
Good luck.

Could it be leukemia?

Have your vet run the tests, but ask him or her directly what diseases he or she is looking for. And don't be surprised if you get bad news. Brace yourself!

I hope whatever it is, the vet can treat it and your dog will be fine.
