My puppy Drax is a beagle/basset mix. He has contact allergies from the weeds and grass around me house. They are getting worse and now is is stracthing and biting so much he is causing small sores on himself, these scabs don't hurt when I doctor them or look at them. The doctor didn't know what was wrong when we went to him but after going on vacation for a few days with no grass or weeds he was getting better, not hardly scratching but when we got home it got worse and quick.

I am looking for treatments to put on the dog or give him to help relieve the itching so he will stop causing scabs on himself. Right now they are being clean and tonight I will be doing the following:
Mowing the lawn and removing the cut grass/weeds
vacuuming the house
Washing his toys, blankets, and everything else
Giving him an oatmeal bath
Applying antiseptic to his scabs

If anyone has any suggestions or knows of any products safe for a puppy that will lick and bite at the area please let me know

There are many different conditions that could cause skin issues for a dog. You mentioned that this appears to be a grass/weed allergic reaction - did the vet concur?

Knowing the true source of the irritation would go a long way to be able to work with it and make you pet more comfortable. It could be a parasitic condition or an allergy and each has different remedies.

Poor puppy!

All of that stuff is good. I do have one question, though: Do you use chemical fertilizers and weed killers on your lawn? If so, stop: That stuff isn't good for 'normal' dogs, and I imagine it would be worse for your pooch.

Another thing you can look at is his food. Try to find something with as few artificial colorings and preservatives as possible. That just might help him get his little system balanced so it won't hurt him as much.

Good luck!

I have 2 beagles, both of which have allergies. Our vet suggested 1 benedryl a day. It helps. Good luck.

Talk to your vet about antihistamines, they can work wonders in about 30% of allergic patients. Make SURE he doesn't have fleas, of course, and you also have the option of blood tests to find out exactly WHAT he is reacting to. If it is something you can eliminate in your yard, you will have won the battle. Good luck!
