The ROC defenses are robust. They have aircraft hangers deep underground with elevators that allow them to use the highway system as airfields. Fast attack craft are similarly kept in pens bored into seaside cliffs. The ROC has much a more refined submarine force than the PRC whose submarines are mainly a threat to their own crews. Thus the ROC could absorb a first strike and then play havoc with any attempted landing. The numbers of warm bodies in the PLA are impressive on paper, but that does not mean they are capable of carrying out an amphibious assault against the ROC. Anyone can do the numbers themselves. If we go for a 2 to 1 manpower advantage for a PRC invasion against the ROC then the PRC is still short of boats. Again with aircraft the PRC has impressive numbers, but if they are going to go to war they would need air defense all over the country, whereas the ROC has only one small island to defend. After all, the US could theoretically retaliate by air from just about any direction. As long as the ROC defenses are good enough to ensure that an invasion would be no cakewalk, the PRC is unlikely to risk it.

Taiwan alone couldn't hope to win if China invades.

That's when allies come into the picture, the United States supplies arms and has pledged to aid Taiwan if attacked.

The nearest US Carrier Battle Group in stationed in Japan and can be on station quickly, also keep in mind other battle groups are milling around in the Persian Gulf and can be diverted.

They are good enough to stop an invasion.

But Taiwan would take major damage.

China just doesn't have the ability to stage a forced invasion of Taiwan.

Even the US doesn't have the ability to stage a force invasion of Taiwan.

We just don't have enough amphibious forces.

Taiwan itself doesn't have a chance against PRC's military.

However, should China start eyeing Taiwan, see how quick a US carrier task force shows up.
